About the Position
The "Public Intoxication Response (PIR) service" plays a crucial role in addressing the health and wellbeing needs of individuals who are intoxicated in the Greater Bendigo/Castlemaine areas, aligning with the recent decriminalisation of public intoxication by the Victorian Government.
The core function of the PIR team is to provide an outreach-based response to individuals in need. This response includes conducting thorough health assessments, offering safe transportation to an appropriate location, monitoring the health and overall well-being of the individuals, and delivering follow-up care as needed. In essence, the PIR service operates as a critical lifeline for those who are intoxicated, ensuring their safety and well-being while also contributing to a more compassionate and health-focused approach in the context of public intoxication.
When staff are not working within the PIR outreach space, they also provide valuable support to the Medical Clinic in the capacity of Practice Nurses. This includes providing immunisations, wound care, and other clinical treatments, as well as undertaking recalls and follow-ups to maintain continuity of care. By contributing across both outreach and clinic settings, staff are able to build stronger connections with community members, ensure culturally safe and holistic care, and enhance the integration between acute outreach responses and ongoing primary health services.
Key Responsibilities
* Assertive Outreach: Proactively engage with Community members in Greater Bendigo/Castlemaine, providing culturally safe, hands-on support to individuals who may be at risk or require intervention.
* On-Call Outreach: Participate in the PIR on-call roster, responding promptly to referrals from Centralised Intake and providing immediate health and wellbeing assessments, safe transport, and follow-up care for individuals experiencing public intoxication.
* Integration with BDAC Medical Clinic: Support the BDAC Medical Clinic when not working in PIR outreach, delivering nursing services including chronic disease management plans, health assessments, immunisations, wound care, and recalls/follow-ups.
* Health Monitoring and Care: Conduct thorough clinical and wellbeing assessments, monitor individuals' conditions during outreach, and ensure safe transfer to appropriate locations where necessary.
* Client Advocacy: Advocate for the rights, health, and overall wellbeing of clients by ensuring they have access to appropriate care pathways, resources, and culturally safe supports.
* Stakeholder Engagement: Build and maintain strong relationships with community organisations, health services, law enforcement, and other relevant stakeholders to strengthen service integration.
* Cultural Safety and Community Connection: Ensure all services are delivered in a culturally safe, respectful, and community-focused manner that aligns with Aboriginal health and wellbeing principles.
* Guidelines and Reporting: Adhere to all program guidelines, BDAC policies, and reporting requirements to ensure high standards of service delivery, accountability, and continuous quality improvement.
* Collaboration and Teamwork: Work closely with the PIR team, BDAC's broader health workforce, and external services to ensure continuity of care and a coordinated approach to client needs.
* Family Violence Response: Fulfil responsibilities under the Multiagency Risk Assessment and Management (MARAM) framework at the Intermediate level, including risk assessments, safety planning, and referrals.
