Primary objective

Function as a member of the Livestock Biosecurity team to protect and enhance the health, welfare and marketability of

livestock throughout the Northern Territory by the delivery of livestock biosecurity branch projects.

Context statement

The Regional Veterinary Officer (RVO) is responsible for coordinating the delivery of veterinary biosecurity services and

projects for the region, and providing professional leadership, mentoring and support for other staff. As the position involves

service delivery for the pastoral industry, which generally operates outside of normal business hours, the RVO is expected

to remain accessible, responsive and flexible to respond to urgent animal health events and service requests. In addition, the

position is required to manage the NT's contribution to a number of animal health projects with responsibility for achieving

outcomes against relevant business plans.

Key duties and responsibilities

1. Administer the Northern Territory Livestock Act 2008 and other relevant legislation and undertake legislation compliance

functions including investigation of alleged breaches.

2. Co-ordinate the delivery of disease investigation, disease surveillance and disease control services.

1. Provide support in the certification for inspection and treatment of livestock for movements.
2. Provide expert technical advice on biosecurity, animal health and welfare to livestock producers, industry professionals

and the community.

1. Undertake the delivery of community engagement and extension support to livestock producers and the community.
2. Participate in the emergency response to pests and diseases of livestock, plants and aquatic animals.

Selection criteria

Essential

1. Relevant tertiary qualification in Veterinary Science and eligibility for registration in the Northern Territory.

2. Experience in the provision of disease investigation, disease surveillance and control programs in the livestock industries,

preferably including beef cattle in the pastoral zone.

3. Demonstrated knowledge and practical skills required in beef cattle husbandry and medicine.

4. Highly developed interpersonal skills and effective oral and written communication skills to relate effectively with a broad

range of the stakeholders and communicate technical and legislative information in simple terms.

5. Demonstrated ability to gather and analyse technical data and effective report writing skills.

1. Self-motivated with initiative and sound judgement and the ability to work unsupervised in remote locations as well as in

multidisciplinary teams.

Desirable

1. Knowledge or experience in emergency management or emergency animal disease responses.

2. Knowledge of the national animal health system and/or experience in animal health policy development.

3. Formal training or experience in the interpretation and application of legislation and conduct of investigations of alleged

breaches of legislation.

Further information

The Regional Veterinary Officer will be appointed as an Inspector under the Northern Territory Livestock Act and other

relevant Acts. The successful applicant must have a current driver's licence and be willing and able to travel extensively,

camp out on occasions in remote locations and use a firearm as needed.
