The Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade (DFAT) promotes and protects Australia's international interests to support our security and prosperity. DFAT manages Australia's international presence – a network of over 120 embassies, high commissions, consulates-general and representative offices across five continents – and we have over 6,000 staff across Australia and overseas.
The Information Management and Technology Division (IMD) within DFAT is a client service driven division, dedicated to delivering high quality, fit-for-purpose ICT solutions to DFAT's global workforce. The division includes six branches: Business Solutions Branch (BSB), Infrastructure & Operational Support Branch (ISB), Cyber Security, Cloud and Networks Branch (CRB), Data and Service Delivery Governance (DAB), Global Modernisation Branch (IGB) and ICT Strategy and Investment Management Branch (IPB). The division delivers complex, high value and high-risk ICT programs and multi-year digital transformation initiatives.
The Department of the Foreign Affairs and Trade is seeking experienced User Experience Designers to up lift existing systems and contribute to the design of new systems as part of a large transformational program of work.
The User Experience Designer will be responsible for creating intuitive, user centred digital experiences that balance user needs with business objectives. The successful candidate will conduct thorough research to understand user behaviours, translate insights into wireframes and prototypes, and deliver visually appealing, accessible designs. Collaboration is key— the successful candidates will work closely with business analysts, developers, product owners, end users and stakeholders to ensure seamless implementation. UX Designers are also expected to continuously test, iterate, and refine designs based on feedback and data, while effectively communicating design decisions and advocating for the user throughout the product development lifecycle.
The key positions responsibilities are:
* Lead and contribute to the preparation and planning of user research, testing and / or discovery work activities in collaboration with the project team and stakeholders.
* Use the results of research, testing and data insights to analyse and interpret the effectiveness of existing and proposed user interfaces designs, to provide clear, evidence-based advice to product and delivery teams.
* Collaborate with a range of stakeholders including business users, Product Owners, subject matter experts (SMEs) and technical teams to create and enhance user centred outcomes.
* Demonstrated experience in the development of user centred design artefacts including service blueprints, user journeys, wireframes, and prototypes as required.
* Communicate findings and translate user insights into practical recommendations that improve user experience and program outcomes.
* Contribute to the establishment and promotion of design guidelines, best practices, and standards, to uplift the maturity of UX design across the department.
Essential criteria
1. UX Design Expertise: Proven experience in designing intuitive, user-centred digital experiences across web and mobile platforms.
2. Research and Analysis: Ability to conduct user research, usability testing, and translate insights into actionable design solutions. Demonstrated experience in developing UX design artefacts including personas, journey maps and service blueprints.
3. Prototyping and Wireframing: Proficiency in tools such as Axure RP, Sketch, or Adobe XD for creating wireframes, prototypes, and design systems.
4. Collaboration Skills & Communication Skills: Strong ability to work with cross-functional teams including developers, product managers, and stakeholders. Excellent ability to present design concepts and rationale clearly to technical and non-technical audiences.
5. Visual and Interaction Design: Demonstrated capability in creating visually appealing interfaces aligned with brand guidelines and accessibility standards.
6. Problem-Solving and Innovation: Ability to identify user pain points and propose creative, practical solutions that enhance user experience.
