Your role
Homes NSW is a division of the Department of Communities and Justice. It brings together the housing and homelessness functions of the Department of Communities and Justice, the NSW Land and Housing Corporation, Aboriginal Housing Office and key worker housing functions from across government all under one roof.
Homes NSW leads work to deliver more social and affordable housing, end the cycle of homelessness, and deliver quality public housing to our 262,000 tenants across NSW. The Design Office within the Housing Portfolio champions, leads and drives high quality design across all Homes projects.
Provide expert design advice and senior professional and people leadership across the Housing Portfolio, supporting the Design Office to deliver high-quality, sustainable, well-designed social and affordable homes and great places. The role delivers integrated design leadership across all stages of project delivery, and leads the development and continuous improvement of design related policy, guidance and standards to build design capacity, share design knowledge and drive design innovation across Homes NSW.
What You'll Do
Operating within government, portfolio and organisational frameworks, the role will be part of the leadership team of a consolidated Design Office function that brings together concept design, design management, design advisory and design policy and systems services, enabling flexible deployment across projects and workstreams, working in alignment with established strategic direction, governance and assurance arrangements.
Your Role Will Include The Following
* Provide senior design leadership and design assurance across the full project lifecycle from pipeline development, feasibility, concept and detailed design development, construction documentation and delivery phases to ensure design integrity and consistent high quality design outcomes.
* Lead urban design, concept and feasibility testing both in-house and with external design consultants to support informed decision making with better yield and delivery outcomes.
* Lead integrated design management across a range of housing typologies including residential flat buildings, senior's housing and low-rise infill development, with a broad range of delivery models including Homes NSW delivered and with other industry partners such as community housing providers (CHP) and private developers.
* Drive the continuous improvement of Homes NSW design processes, standards, guidelines, policies and tools, and design related innovation and research including MMC and the NSW Pattern Book.
* Collaborate with internal stakeholders such as development, delivery, assets, housing services, procurement and commercial teams to balance design quality, constructability, cost, risk and program considerations with maintenance and tenant needs, and build strong internal and external relationships that support high-quality outcomes and enhance the professional reputation of Homes NSW.
* Provide technical design advice on applicable Australian Standards, statutory and contractual specifications, buildability and safety-in-design to support effective project and program outcomes.
* Engage and oversee external design consultants, including input into design and project brief development and procurement processes, to ensure high design quality, value-for-money and alignment with Homes NSW requirements.
* Lead, manage, mentor and develop Design Office staff, fostering a high-performing, professional and collaborative team environment.
* Work collaboratively with all Homes and Housing Portfolio branches, governance and external stakeholders to build design capacity, share design knowledge and drive design innovation.
What We're Looking For
* Tertiary qualifications in Architecture.
* Eligibility for registration with the NSW Architects Registration Board or equivalent.
* Demonstrated commitment to design excellence and design integrity. Extensive experience in architectural design of housing across all or many project stages, including master planning, feasibility, concept and design development, delivery and post-occupancy review.
* Demonstrated experience participating in or supporting design review and other design assurance processes.
* Demonstrated experience interpreting and responding to NSW design and planning controls and guidance, and statutory approval processes within complex project environments.
* Strong knowledge of the design industry and external networks.
* Strong understanding of NSW building legislation, the NCC and relevant Australian Standards.
* Proven ability in leading people, influencing stakeholders and working collaboratively across multidisciplinary teams.
