This position is responsible for managing the X-Ray Diffraction (XRD) Facility within the John de Laeter Centre (JdLC) at Curtin University. The JdLC is a user-focused core research infrastructure facility within the Faculty of Science and Engineering (SAE), comprising 14 research Facilities and housing over $63 million in advanced instrumentation.
The XRD Facility includes two powder X-ray diffractometers and an in-situ X-ray diffractometer, as well as dedicated sample preparation laboratories. More information about the facility is available at : facilities / x-ray-diffraction-and-scattering-facility /
The X-ray Diffraction (XRD) Laboratory Manager is responsible for the operation, maintenance, and strategic development of the XRD facility within the JdLC. This role supports a diverse user base across geoscience, materials science, and engineering disciplines, ensuring the delivery of high-quality analytical services, research support, and training. Extension of the position may be possible but is not guaranteed.
Your responsibilities will include
Oversee daily operations of the XRD laboratory, including instrument scheduling, sample analysis, and data reporting.
Maintain and optimise performance of XRD instrumentation.
Provide expert advice and training to researchers, students, and industry clients on sample preparation, data acquisition, and interpretation.
Collaborate with academic staff to support research projects and develop new analytical methodologies.
Ensure compliance with Curtin University's safety protocols and regulatory standards.
Contribute to the strategic planning and development of the XRD facility as part of the JdLC's broader analytical capabilities.
Support funding applications and research proposals involving XRD techniques.
Maintain accurate records of laboratory usage, invoicing, and instrument performance.
Qualifications & Experience
A postgraduate qualification in materials science, geology, chemistry, physics, or a related field.
Demonstrated experience in X-ray diffraction techniques and instrumentation.
Demonstrable experience in communicating technical results to research partners, government and industry.
Experience in occupational health and safety in research or industrial environments.
Role Requirements
As this is a fixed-term contract, you will require current work rights in Australia that match the tenure of this role.
