The Opportunity
The Faculty of Engineering is seeking a Health and Safety Advisor to cover parental leave. This role works closely with the Health & Safety Partner – Engineering, and other Faculty H&S Advisors to support people across Schools within the Faculty to work safely by delivering expert technical advice and promoting a positive health and safety culture within the School. This includes working with Schools on hazard & incident response, risk assessments, and assurance activities to achieve practical solutions that ensure health and safety risks are being managed well, and we are complying with relevant health and safety legislation. This particular role requires a person with strong experience as a H&S Advisor in high-risk environments and who is comfortable managing critical risks such as hazardous materials (chemicals), working with electricity, and risks related to engineering laboratory equipment.
The role of Health and Safety Advisor reports to the Faculty Health and Safety Business Partner, with a dotted reporting line to School Managers and has no direct reports. This position will work collaboratively with Laboratory Managers and Technical Officers to ensure a safe workplace.
* Salary, Broadbanded Level 6/7:
o Level 6 - $103,866 to $110,801 per annum + 17% superannuation
o Level 7 - $113,926 to $123,301 per annum + 17% superannuation
* Full time
* Fixed term – ASAP start until early March 2027 for parental leave cover
* Location: Kensington campus – Sydney, Australia

Skills and Experience
* Experience as a H&S Advisor in high-risk industries with knowledge of effective critical risk management, modern health & safety management systems, and working collaboratively with stakeholders to achieve safe outcomes.
* Relevant qualifications and experience or equivalent competence gained through any combination of education, training and experience.
* Experience in implementing health and safety management systems, programs, procedures, and guidelines in a high-risk industry.
* Sound knowledge of health and safety legislation, Australian Standards and Codes of Practice relevant to the Schools' activities.
* Demonstrated ability to research, advise on and resolve a wide range of health and safety technical issues.
* Strong IT skills, including ability to use digital enterprise health and safety software systems.
* Highly developed written and oral communication skills, including public speaking and the ability to coach and deliver training.
* Demonstrated ability to consult, influence and build strong relationships to achieve high levels of compliance in health and safety.
* An understanding of and commitment to UNSW's aims, objectives, and values in action, together with relevant policies and guidelines.
* Knowledge of health and safety responsibilities and commitment to attending relevant health and safety training.
* In-depth knowledge of plant and equipment, hazardous substances, civil engineering & materials science, pilot engineering projects, as they apply to research laboratories and workshops will be highly regarded, as will capability in data and analytics.
