The role of a dental assistant is to provide essential support in the examination and treatment of patients. This includes preparing exam rooms and instrumentation, operating dental equipment, and administering topical anesthetics.

* Establish reasons for visits, document patient complaints and visit encounters in electronic medical records.
* Participate in quality improvement and workflow enhancements supporting patient care.
* Prepare patients, sterilize instruments, set up trays, and assist during procedures.
* Expose dental diagnostic x-rays and record treatment information.
* Take and record medical and dental histories and vital signs.
* Provide postoperative instructions and assist in managing emergencies.
* Maintain patient flow, stock rooms, and ensure quality controls.
* Maintain supplies, order medications, and dispose of contaminated materials per policies and regulations.
* Perform sealants and basic cleanings, including billable services.

Required qualifications include completion of a dental assistant training program, certification as a CDA, Ohio State Dental Radiograph permit, current BLS certification, knowledge of universal precautions, bloodborne pathogens, and OSHA guidelines, proficiency with electronic medical records, interpersonal skills including empathy and respect for diverse backgrounds, critical thinking and ability to work independently, teamwork skills and attention to detail.
