The Role
At ABC News, you'll create visually engaging and memorable digital experiences that turn data journalism and interactive storytelling into compelling news moments for millions of Australians.
The Job
Working as the sole, senior designer for the Digital Story Innovations team create mobile-first visual journalism, with a key focus on designing interactive data accurate, engaging visuals using interactive maps, thought provoking charts, data, satellite images and 3D graphics to make complex information easy to understand.Use HTML, CSS and Javascript, and frameworks such as Svelte and React, to develop prototypes for interactive stories.Collaborate with developers and journalists to produce visuals for both breaking news and longform journalism projects.Stay current with digital news design trends and share new ideas with the team.Explore new storytelling formats and contribute diverse, relevant story ideas for ABC audiences.

About You
You'll have:
Relevant qualifications and experience as a senior designer with a digital news team.Strong experience designing complex visuals and interactive content for digital news.Skills in front end web development for digital news and knowledge of front-end design needs for storytelling tools like scrollytellers and responsive web graphics.An understanding of the work of the Digital Story Innovations team and other visual journalism teams in Australia around the world.Proficient in Adobe Creative Suite, Figma and other graphic tools.Desirable: 3D modelling, QGIS, IllustrationAn innovative streak with the ability to problem solve, learn new skills on the fly and contribute ideas on how we cover the news with visualsThe ability to work well independently and under tight deadlines.The ability to identify and create engaging visuals for social media and digital collaborative mindset and a commitment to diverse, authentic storytelling.
