About the role
The Weipa Town Authority (WTA) is seeking an experienced and motivated Accountant to join our team in one of Australia's most unique and vibrant remote communities. This opportunity allows you to apply accounting expertise to support essential local services and infrastructure while enjoying a relaxed coastal lifestyle in Far North Queensland.
Weipa is a thriving coastal community nestled along the picturesque Albatross Bay on the western shores of Cape York Peninsula, with a population of approximately 4,200 residents. Situated roughly 200 km from Australia's northernmost tip and accessible by an 800 km road journey from Cairns (or a 1.5‐hour flight), it offers all modern facilities and conveniences expected of a bustling town.
Responsibilities
* Prepare and maintain accurate financial records in accordance with relevant legislation and accounting standards
* Assist with annual budgets, long‐term financial planning, and forecasting
* Manage reconciliations, journals, and end‐of‐month processes
* Support audit processes and ensure regulatory compliance
* Prepare financial reports for management and the Authority
* Contribute to continuous improvement of financial systems and processes
* Complete oversight and ownership of Rates revenue
Qualifications
* A degree in Accounting or a related discipline
* Experience in financial accounting and reporting, ideally within government or a regulated environment
* High‐level computer literacy (Accounting software, Microsoft Office Suite Word/Excel)
* Well‐developed time‐management and prioritisation skills
* Strong interpersonal and communication skills with the ability to work well in a team and autonomously
* Certified Practicing Accountant (CPA) / Chartered Accountant (CA) or working towards
* Previous experience in Local Government
* Previous experience with the MagiQ Software suite
