Robert Half Executive Search has been retained to identify an accomplished business leader for a newly created General Manager (GM) position with an established Australian company manufacturing an innovative modular building suite of products. The GM will partner closely with the CEO, Board and wider Leadership Team to successfully commercialise a newly created business unit with a significant growth agenda.
With significant market potential for this new division in Australia initially, with expectations to grow revenues to $100M+ in the next 5-10 years, this is an exciting opportunity to lead a dynamic high growth business and will appeal to a commercial General Manager with a global mindset who will be excited by the scale-up opportunity ahead.
Role
The GM will define, lead and ensure growth in this new business unit and will effectively set up the division from scratch, with the ability to leverage current corporate services teams for support. This role will include intentional recruitment and the development of automated manufacturing capability.
In addition, the GM will be responsible for complete ownership over the go-to-market strategy for this division and will build a commercialisation plan to foster opportunities in the Australian Building sector. Partnering in strategy with the CEO, the successful GM will run this entity at a grassroots level, maintaining the high standard of the already established wider company ensuring the business is set up for sustainable growth.
This role will suit an accomplished and commercially astute individual with proven leadership and business-building experience who will successfully drive business operations, inspire the team and achieve growth and financial targets.
Managing the rapid projected growth of this division will require an inspired and experienced GM who can roll up their sleeves to define key processes, set up a fabrication facility to work towards production at scale and develop new business commercial partnerships.
Ideal Candidate
The successful candidate will have 5-10 years of commercial leadership experience scaling businesses at pace in the commercial buildings and products, precast or structural modular/prefab building systems, formwork systems, or structural steel fabrication sectors. Demonstrable experience overseeing operations and undertaking high-level business development, with a thorough understanding of business operations in a manufacturing environment is essential with International exposure an added bonus.
This individual will be a tenured manager with proven experience in a high-level leadership position (GM/MD/Director) in a standalone scaling business, or a division of a large business. Additionally, a technical understanding of engineering concepts would be highly advantageous. Strong commercial capability, sales negotiation skills and the ability to deliver on profitability targets to grow a successful business will be critical. Previous success managing people, processes and technology will be essential to the success of this individual in the role.
The ideal candidate will have gained experience in fabrication and will understand how to go from zero to a semi-automated, to fully automated factory set ups advancing the manufacturing capability from a position of almost zero production today to production at scale to meet demand.
A high degree of intellect, emotional intelligence, commercial judgement and sound decision-making will be required to effectively build this business from scratch and provide clear direction to all internal and external stakeholders. A highly analytical individual with both gravitas and humility will likely integrate well and thrive in this fast-paced business built on a culture of empowerment, accountability and innovation.
* Preferably a bachelor’s degree in a relevant field such as manufacturing, engineering, mechatronics, construction management and/or business management.
* Proven end-to-end leadership of a whole business or a division of a more significant business.
* Proven success in the Buildings market in Australia.
* Background in commercial buildings and/or precast/infrastructure/structural product fabrication / manufacturing sectors.
* Prior go to market experience with a complex product is highly advantageous.
* Full P&L responsibility at a GM level or as the head of a significant business unit.
* Strong bids and tenders, contract negotiation and project management experience.
* Extensive leadership and experience, particularly driving strategy in a fast-growing organization.
* Robust financial acumen to quantify the size of opportunities and strengthen negotiation position with potential partners or clients.
* Strong business development experience, particularly in the construction innovation and commercial buildings space.
* Proven success in global markets, navigating cultural differences and multi-language negotiation.
