At the Department of Veterans’ Affairs (DVA), data helps us improve services and outcomes for veterans and their families. From timely reporting and policy insights to advanced analytics, simulation modelling and machine learning, our work supports decisions that matter.
The Data and Insights Branch is modernising how DVA manages and uses data, analytics and research to underpin evidence-based policy, service delivery and wellbeing outcomes. We value collaboration, curiosity and practical problem-solving, building capability and trusted data products so the department can better understand and respond to changing needs.
The Data Engineering team is building and evolving DVA’s enterprise data platform and warehouse, integrating data from multiple sources into curated, well-governed data products used for standard reporting, advanced analytics and predictive analysis. We make source-system data easier to understand and use by applying strong modelling practices, clear documentation, quality controls and fit-for-purpose pipelines. We partner closely with analysts, visualisation specialists and ICT teams, and we support proof-of-concepts to trial new approaches, particularly in cloud infrastructure and modern engineering practices.
We are particularly interested in candidates with experience in cloud environments (Azure and/or AWS) and modern data engineering stacks. Strong Python and SQL skills are important. Experience with dimensional modelling (3NF and star schemas), DBT, Airflow, Atlassian Cloud (Jira/Confluence) and GitLab is also highly regarded.
This role suits a senior engineer who enjoys working across the full delivery lifecycle, translating business needs into reliable data assets, uplifting engineering standards, and mentoring others. You’ll work with meaningful datasets, contribute to improved public services, and help shape how DVA uses data safely and effectively.
