The Opportunity

Do you have an advanced level of proficiency in one of the languages listed below, or intermediate skills and a willingness to develop to an advanced level? We are seeking people with current advanced proficiency - or those with a demonstrated record of intermediate skills who are willing to develop to an advanced level - to be employed as a Linguist in the following languages:

- Arabic
- Chinese
- Hindi
- Farsi
- Russian

Linguists work as part of a diverse team to provide direct support to ASIO\'s investigations, operations and international partnerships. They use sound judgement and strong analytical skills to identify valuable information and communicate it effectively, informing decision-making and contributing to protecting Australia.

ASIO provides generous upskilling support for language development. This is available to successful applicants with intermediate level foreign language skills who display aptitude for foreign language learning, and a commitment to further developing their skills. This support is also available to successful applicants with an advanced level of language proficiency to maintain language capability. You may be keen to build on your current advanced level language proficiency by cross-training in one of the other languages listed above.

What you will bring (Qualifications)

- An advanced level of proficiency (heritage, native or learned) in one of the above languages.
- Intermediate skills (heritage, native or learned) with a commitment to further develop to advanced level.
- Analytical and critical thinking skills.
- Sound English report writing skills.
- Ability to work with a range of technologies.
- Strong interpersonal skills and willingness to work in a team environment.
- Ongoing commitment to learning.
- Personal qualities that exemplify ASIO\'s values and expected behaviours.

Successful candidates will be offered a role at a classification commensurate with their level of foreign language proficiency and other demonstrated capabilities. Please note: foreign language skills will be subject to initial and subsequent periodic testing.

- Australian citizenship.

Locations are Canberra, Melbourne, Sydney, Adelaide, Perth and Darwin. Relocation assistance may be considered for successful candidates.

Employment conditions

Employment is under the Australian Security Intelligence Organisation Act 1979. Conditions of service are similar to those in the Australian Public Service. Entitlements under the Public Service Act 1999 apply and superannuation is continued under Commonwealth schemes. Salary packaging is available.
