Job Description
Owner's Engineer – Lead Mechanical Engineer
Company Description
At Green Gravity, we're pioneering a breakthrough approach to the clean energy transition. Our mission is to repurpose legacy mining infrastructure into cutting-edge gravitational energy storage systems, delivering a sustainable, low-cost solution to renewable energy storage challenges worldwide.
We're tackling one of the most important challenges of our time: enabling the shift to a net-zero future. By joining our passionate and highly engaged team, you'll contribute directly to meaningful, world-changing work — with the support of an inclusive, flexible, and empowering workplace that optimises your ability to make a difference.
The Opportunity
We're seeking an Owner's Engineer – Lead Mechanical Engineer to provide mechanical engineering technical authority across the development and delivery of Green Gravity's Gravity Energy Storage System (GESS) projects and assets.
This is a senior, technically focused role within our Engineering Team, responsible for translating business and operational needs into clear mechanical engineering requirements and ensuring plant and equipment are delivered safely, compliantly, and fit-for-purpose across the asset life cycle.
Acting as the mechanical package lead, you'll define scopes and specifications, assure outsourced engineering and fabrication, and provide independent technical oversight through procurement, manufacture, testing, commissioning and handover. This role is engineering-led rather than project management, centred on sound judgement, governance, and assurance.
You'll work closely with EPCs, OEMs, fabricators, and internal stakeholders to ensure our technology is delivered to the highest standards — supporting Green Gravity's transition from development to commercial deployment.
Key Responsibilities
* Develop mechanical design basis documents, technical specifications, datasheets, and scopes of work for outsourced engineering and supply.
* Establish and maintain engineering governance, including Safety in Design, technical risk management, design control, and verification & validation.
* Review, challenge, and accept contractor and OEM deliverables (drawings, models, calculations, reports, ITPs, test procedures).
* Provide technical input into procurement activities, including tender documentation, bid evaluations, clarifications, and vendor engagement.
* Manage technical queries, deviations, non-conformances, and engineering changes with clear configuration control and traceability.
* Support manufacturing and fabrication oversight, inspections, and FAT/SAT activities.
About You
We're looking for an experienced, pragmatic engineer who brings strong technical judgement, a risk-aware mindset, and a passion for applying engineering excellence to meaningful clean energy projects. You don't need to meet every requirement to be successful — if you're excited about the role and believe you could excel, we encourage you to apply.
* Qualified: Bachelor's degree (or higher) in Mechanical Engineering (Engineers Australia recognised).
* Highly Experienced: Typically 10+ years post-graduate experience delivering mechanical packages on capital projects in energy, mining, or heavy industry environments.
* Owner's Engineering Mindset: Comfortable defining requirements, assuring outsourced design, and constructively challenging suppliers and contractors.
* Governance-Focused: Strong experience in Safety in Design, design control, verification & validation, and technical risk management.
* Technically Rigorous: High attention to detail, disciplined documentation practices, and strong written communication.
* Collaborative: Able to work effectively with EPCs, OEMs, fabricators, and multidisciplinary internal teams.
* Purpose-Driven: Motivated by meaningful work and contributing to the global clean energy transition.
* Professional Recognition: CPEng / RPEQ (or working towards) is desirable.
Why Join Green Gravity
* Purpose with Impact: Be at the forefront of the global clean energy transition, shaping a new category of grid-scale storage.
* Technical Ownership: Operate as a recognised subject-matter expert with genuine authority and influence over outcomes.
* Flexible & Inclusive: Flexible working arrangements that support balance and performance.
* Growth & Development: Develop alongside a growing project delivery portfolio and expanding technology deployment.
* Autonomy & Accountability: Work in a pre-revenue, high-impact environment where your decisions truly matter.
* Equity Participation: Share in the success you help create through our employee equity scheme.
* Location Advantage: Based in Wollongong, with collaboration across Wollongong and Brisbane teams.
If you're excited by the idea of applying your mechanical engineering expertise to one of Australia's most impactful clean energy technologies — and want to work in a collaborative, values-driven environment where engineering excellence truly counts — we'd love to hear from you.
Even if you don't meet every listed requirement, we encourage you to apply. Your skills, experience, and perspective could be exactly what we're looking for.
