A market-leading industrial solutions company with a proud, decades-long presence across Australia and New Zealand is seeking an experienced Head of Safety to lead and elevate its WHSE strategy across all operations.

In this pivotal role, you will shape and embed a strong WHSE leadership culture across all ANZ sites, ensuring alignment with strategic goals, regulatory compliance, and continuous improvement initiatives. Partnering closely with operational leaders, you will influence behaviors, enhance safety performance, and drive a consistent, customer-focused approach to risk management and assurance throughout the business.

As a strategic partner to operations and management, you will uphold the highest standards in safety, environmental, and risk management. You will lead initiatives to improve safety leadership, contractor onboarding, and environmental outcomes, ensuring sound decision-making and fostering a culture of continuous improvement. Your efforts will directly support the company’s long-term sustainability and ESG commitments, delivering consistent, reliable services and a safer workplace.


Key Responsibilities:

* Develop, communicate and embed a WHSE strategy which drives and supports a safety leadership culture across the Company
* Plan and manage the implementation of agreed Company strategies and systems, working cooperatively with others involved in the implementation process
* Review the critical risk program and lead the program of work to ensure critical risks are well articulated, controls are fit for purpose and successfully implemented across the Company
* Enhance and maintain the Company Safety Management System
* Optimise and manage the Elumina Safety application
* Develop lead and lag indicators and key performance metrics regarding the effectiveness of the WHS strategy with the Executive, e.g., LTIFR, RIFR, hazard identification reporting


Health & Safety Leadership Culture:

* Work closely with the Executive Group to identify and meet the needs of managers and staff to embed practices into daily activities, including understanding safety leadership responsibilities and behaviours, relevant legislation and regulations
* Provide specialist WHSE advice to the Executive Group, operational managers and supervisors regarding effective management of WHSE matters
* Establish feedback and WHSE learning and development interventions based on identification of capability gaps in partnership with relevant stakeholders, including the WHS Committee, to improve safety culture and outcomes
* Hands-on leadership of risk and exposure reduction and injury prevention strategies
* Convene and facilitate the WHS Committee, ensuring agendas and minutes are prepared and the reporting process is effective
* Ensure appropriate performance metrics and plans are in place for operational managers aligned with Company goals
* Establish and maintain effective engagement with frontline teams to embed a safety culture, including monthly toolbox topics and materials


Contractor Safety Management:

* Oversee and verify the implementation of the Contractor Management Standard across the business with a focus on transport, maintenance, and vendors
* Deploy clear onboarding standards, performance scorecards, and integrated risk controls, ensuring engagement with operational management and vendors
* Partner with service delivery partners to drive a consistent approach to managing critical risks
* Provide plans annually to strengthen standards, understanding, actions, and compliance


Environmental Management:

* Implement an appropriate management system to manage current environmental impact with a reporting schedule and targets
* Establish systems to monitor and manage regulatory compliance, including detailed reviews across sites
* Ensure control measures are in place for key environmental risks, including hazardous substances, waste management, stormwater, wastewater discharge, air emissions, odour, and noise
* Monitor site compliance and co-design remedial plans where requirements are not met


Legal Compliance & Risk Management:

* Monitor relevant legislation and standards, making recommendations to senior management
* Identify and prioritize WHSE risks, recommending mitigation strategies
* Prepare regular WHSE performance reports
* Design and execute annual site audits across all locations
* Lead audits against AS4801 and ISO14001 standards


Incident and Injury Management:

* Monitor WHSE incidents and injuries, developing prevention initiatives based on trends
* Coordinate with managers to notify serious incidents to WorkSafe
* Facilitate incident investigations, ensuring remedial actions are taken
* Advise employees on incident investigation and prevention strategies
* Develop strategies to minimize WHS incident impacts
* Collaborate with injury management organizations for effective injury handling


Policy, Procedures, and Documentation:

* Enhance and implement the WHSE Policy and Procedures framework
* Maintain comprehensive WHSE policies and procedures
* Report monthly on WHSE performance to the Executive
* Oversee Employee Assistance Program (EAP) and other health services


Safety and Environmental Sustainability:

* Maintain a safe workplace system
* Achieve targeted safety audits and corrective actions
* Report and investigate high potential incidents
* Ensure employee understanding and contribution to WHSE policies and training
* Support environmental and sustainability reporting
* Attend mandatory training and report environmental hazards


Quality Improvement:

* Participate in quality improvement programs and activities
* Implement recommendations from quality reviews


Key Requirements:

* Diploma in WHS or equivalent experience
* Knowledge of WHS legislation and risk management
* Certificate IV in Training and Assessment or working towards it
* Experience in developing and auditing WHSE programs
* Experience in safety training and culture change
* Knowledge of environmental principles and sustainable practices
* Strong negotiation, communication, and teamwork skills
* Ability to manage multiple projects and priorities
* Knowledge of WHS law and standards like AS4801
* Understanding of injury management processes
* Experience in laundry or production environments is advantageous
* Current Australian Driver's Licence preferred
