Microbial Systems Engineer Position
The goal of this research position is to develop novel microbial cell factories and implement strategies for the engineering of metabolic pathways in yeast.
1. Research:
* Create and test methods to engineer metabolic pathways in hosts such as Yarrowia lipolytica, Saccharomyces cerevisiae, and Pichia pastoris.
* Develop and apply controls to validate engineered pathways for accuracy, stability, and performance.
* In collaboration with an automation specialist, create automated protocols for strain engineering in yeast.
* Cultivate microorganisms using established fermentation methods and contribute to new fermentation strategy development as needed.
* Coordinate and execute sample preparation workflows for downstream proteomics and metabolomics analyses.
* Generate high-quality experimental data and contribute to data interpretation and documentation.
* Assist in designing, developing, and optimizing research methodologies, protocols, and quality assurance standards.
* Publish research findings in scientific manuscripts and technical reports.
* Participate in competitive research funding applications.
* Evaluate and maintain laboratory instruments to ensure optimal performance.
2. Supervision and Researcher Development:
* Provide training and technical guidance to students and research staff on strain engineering and fermentation processes.
* Support junior scientists' professional growth by sharing knowledge and best practices.
* Supervise researchers in line with expectations.
* Foster a collaborative research environment that promotes skills development and mentoring.
* Contribute to the development of junior team members' research capabilities and confidence.
3. Operational Support:
* Maintain daily operations of the research centre, including lab infrastructure support.
* Offer expert advice on experimental methods, equipment selection, risk assessments, quality assurance procedures, and chemical and biological waste management.
* Encourage a proactive safety culture and assist with safety inductions.
* Collaborate with colleagues to improve lab safety and efficiency.
* Resolve conflicts and grievances in accordance with policies.
* Perform other duties as directed by the management team or supervisor.
