Join Mackay Regional Council as our Financial Accounting Specialist (FS0051) and play a key role in supporting strong governance, smarter decision-making and continuous improvement across the organisation. This is a temporary full‐time parental leave opportunity on a two‐year contract to May 2028, based in Mackay with a hybrid arrangement and flexible hours, including an in‐office day each Thursday. You'll work across high‐impact projects, end‐of‐year processing and audit activities, partnering with teams across Council to deliver practical, value‐adding outcomes.
About This Opportunity
* Leverage your strong understanding of financial and business processes to deliver practical improvements and better outcomes for the organisation.
* Support key financial projects and end‐of‐year activities, maintaining high standards of accuracy, compliance and governance.
* Lead complex and detailed financial investigations and reviews, providing clear findings and recommendations when requested.
* Coordinate the annual audit of Council's accounts (with support from the Financial Accounting Coordinator) and respond to internal and external audit queries, including the Queensland Audit Office as required.
* Interpret and analyse financial data to provide specialist advice and recommendations in line with relevant legislation and Accounting Standards.
* Work side‐by‐side with stakeholders including the Sustainability, Corporate Travel, Procurement and other corporate teams to streamline processes, strengthen controls and support great service delivery.
* Thrive in a genuinely collaborative environment building trusted relationships, sharing insights and influencing best‐practice financial outcomes across the business.
Essential Qualifications, Experience & Skills
* Bachelor qualification in Finance (or related discipline) – essential.
* CA or CPA qualification – desirable.
* 3–5 years' experience in financial accounting, audit coordination and/or complex financial analysis.
* Proactive and highly detail‐oriented, with strong analytical skills and the ability to investigate and resolve complex matters.
* Collaborative communicator who can build effective working relationships across diverse stakeholder groups.
* Demonstrated capability to identify improvement opportunities and support change across financial and business processes.
