Backhoe Operator/Labourer
The Opportunity
To undertake labouring tasks and efficiently operate a range of Council rigid trucks and road plant to meet required standards on maintenance and construction projects.

Banana Shire is situated in Central Queensland, Australia located 120 km west of the growing industrial city and port of Gladstone - and an easy drive to the city of Rockhampton.
Our population is approximately 15,000 people spread over 28,577 square kilometres. Major industries in the area include Coal Mining, Power Generation, Beef Production, dryland cropping and irrigation such as Lucerne and Cotton.
DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
- Perform general labouring duties
- Provide high quality plant operation services to the work teams at various locations within and outside of the Shire
- Maintain and service plant and equipment, in accordance with operating procedures
- Maintain a daily diary of plant movements as required
- Read and interpret basic plans and instructions
- Undertake traffic control and implement traffic control plans as required
- Report identified weeds
- Respond to internal and external customer request as required
- Participate in toolbox and team meetings.
- Participate in mandatory training and other learning and development opportunities
- Liaise with clients, other Council staff, the public, consultants, utility and government authorities
- Undertake routine administrative tasks as required by the position e.g. timesheets
- Assist senior staff to continuously improve work processes and develop new practices as required
- Participate in training, exercises and response to disaster management and recovery as required
- Undertake other relevant duties as directed, consistent with skills, competence and training.
QUALIFICATIONS, EDUCATION AND LICENCE REQUIREMENTS
Compulsory
- Queensland Class ‘C’ manual driver’s licence
- Qld General Safety Induction - White or Blue Card
- Civil Construction – Operator Backhoe (LB) Competency.
Desirable
- Civil Construction Plant competencies highly regarded
- Traffic Management Implementation Plan Competency
- Traffic Controller Licence.
ABILITIES, SKILLS AND KNOWLEDGE REQUIRED
Compulsory
- Demonstrated experience in the effective operation of heavy vehicles within a construction and maintenance infrastructure environment together with knowledge of road construction and maintenance techniques
- Basic literacy, numeracy and communication skills
- Sound understanding of and commitment to EEO and WHS principles and practices
- Demonstrated ability to work effectively in a team setting under minimal supervision.
