Job Description

Founding Data Platform & Analytics Lead

Full-time, Hybrid, Sydney

The Company

Checkbox is a Series A Sequoia-backed technology start-up with a mission to enable meaningful work for all. To achieve this, we built a no-code automation platform with the belief that the power of digital creation needs to be accessible to everyone, not just IT teams. Seeing non-technical users surprisingly delighted when they use our technology to create in ways they never thought they ever could motivate us. Whilst our mission is big, our focus is sharp. Today we're focused on in-house legal departments from companies including Disney, Elastic, J Frog, SAP and Coca-Cola.

Recently, we expanded our offering to not only help people do meaningful work, but manage it too. This came with the launch of our AI-powered Intake & Matter Management product – the "JIRA for lawyers". This is part of our broader vision to be the "Legal Service Hub" for organizations, responsible for how legal work is raised, allocated, managed, and resolved. We believe that one day the Legal Service Hub will be as ubiquitous for legal teams as the CRM for commercial teams and we will win this category.

You'll work alongside team members across the United States, Australia, and Asia, collaborating with incredible high performers and Co-Founders in the Forbes 30 Under 30 list. Our culture is one of our superpowers. It's what people talk about when they join us, work with us, and leave us. Read about what makes all of us a "Checkmate" here:

The Position

At Checkbox you will be joining a small tight-knit team of passionate, intelligent & driven people. It is vital for us that our people feel a sense of individual impact, trust, and continuous growth while solving challenging problems to get things done. Our product team members are the innovators in our business, paving the way for growth opportunities and driving outcomes across our organisation. We're always seeking smart, creative & driven people to join our team to build a world-leading product.

We're looking for a Data Leader to build and own the foundations of how data is captured, modeled, and used across our product and business. This role sits at the intersection of product, engineering, and go-to-market teams, with a clear mandate: turn data into a strategic asset that drives better decisions at every level of the company.

As our first senior data leader, you'll be responsible for shaping our analytics and event tracking strategy end-to-end, from discovery and instrumentation, through to data modeling, pipelines, and self-serve insights. You'll work closely with product teams to define what "success" looks like, ensure it's measurable, and enable teams to confidently answer questions about product adoption, feature performance, and customer behavior.

This is a hands-on role with significant scope and influence. You'll design systems that scale with a multi-tenant SaaS platform, support enterprise customers with complex deployment models, and help the business move from intuition-led to insight-led decision making. If you enjoy combining technical depth with product thinking, and want to leave a lasting imprint on how a company uses data, this role is for you.

In this position, you will be responsible for:

* Empowering the business to make effective data driven decisions - Leading discovery for analytics & insights required by product teams & the broader business to empower them to make decisions more effectively

* Owning & being the custodian of our event tracking infrastructure - Design and maintain your event taxonomy, ensure instrumentation quality, own the tracking plan

* Enabling product insights & informed product decisions - Ensure product teams are enabled to understand the success of the product wholistically as well as the success of individual features

* Enabling a 360 view of the customer - Create unified customer/account data models linking product usage, stateful application data, and customer metadata

* Self-serve analytics - Make data accessible to product and CS teams through tools like Metabase, Looker, or similar

* Cross-environment data aggregation - Build pipelines to centralize data from multi-tenant and single-tenant environments into a queryable data warehouse

* Instrumentation governance - Partner with engineering teams to ensure new features ship with proper tracking

About you

* At least 5 years of experience in analytics

* At least 2 years of experience in data engineering

* Demonstrated ability in conducting discovery for and translating business & product needs into event schemas & data assets that drive insights

* Track record of successfully enabling non-technical teams with data and/or productizing & commercializing data assets

* Experience working with multiple environments, regional deployments as well as single-tenant enterprise customers & experienced with identity resolution across environments, tenants & various data sources

* Experience working at enterprise Series A / B startups with multi-tenant SaaS

* Strong SQL and data modeling (dimensional modeling, slowly changing dimensions)

* Experience with event streaming platforms (Segment, RudderStack, or custom Kafka/Kinesis)

* Experience with modern data stack (Databricks, Snowflake, BigQuery, or Redshift)

* Experience with visualisation tools

* dbt or similar transformation frameworks

* Experience working within the AWS infrastructure stack
