Grounds maintenance trainee - defence

We are currently recruiting for trainees to join our teams at RAAF Edinburgh and Keswick Barracks Precincts with a guaranteed ongoing position upon completion of the traineeship!

This traineeship provides an excellent opportunity to commence or further develop a career in land management within the Defence & Social Infrastructure sector. You will gain practical, hands‐on experience while completing the nationally recognised AHC30722 Certificate III in Horticulture through blended (face‐to‐face and online) training delivered during work hours.

Working under the guidance of experienced professionals, you will support land management activities across local defence bases, contributing to real projects while developing core horticultural and grounds maintenance skills.

About the role

Your key responsibilities will include:

• Assisting with maintaining green spaces, garden beds, and landscaped areas.
• Learning and applying foundational skills in weeding, trimming, and basic pruning of plants and shrubs.
• Supporting and maintaining irrigation systems.
• Learning to sow and propagate plants, shrubs, and trees.
• Operating lawn and garden equipment, and small machinery.
• Developing time‐management skills to support seasonal and daily task planning.
• Learning to communicate effectively with team members, contractors, and site personnel.

About you

Our ideal candidate will have:

• Commitment to completing the AHC30722 Certificate III in Horticulture.
• Willingness to learn horticulture, grounds maintenance, and safe work practices.
• Ability to follow instructions and work as part of a team.
• Basic literacy and numeracy skills to support training and workplace documentation.
• Valid driver's licence and reliable personal transport.
• Ability to work collaboratively in a team environment.
• Good written and verbal communication skills.

You must be an Australian Citizen and able to obtain and maintain a Defence Security Clearance.
