About the School
The School of Special Educational Needs: Behaviour and Engagement (SSEN:BE) provides educational support and services for students with extreme, complex and challenging behaviours across a K–12 context.
Services include engagement centres and the Midland Learning Academy, coordinated as a statewide model of supports for schools, teachers and students.
SSEN:BE coordinates the following services:
Professional learning to improve student engagement and behaviour
Consultative support for planning for students with very complex needs
Direct and indirect support for students with extreme, challenging and complex needs
The successful applicant will work with SSEN:BE's Youth Transition team to provide case coordination and support for students involved in the Youth Justice system, transitioning to education, training or employment options.
Youth Transition Coordinators work within the Young Offenders Act and the Children and Community Services Act to connect young people and families to services to support engagement in education or training.
The role will strengthen relationships between the Department of Justice and SSEN:BE, informing education and pathway planning for young people.
The successful applicant will be based at Banksia Hill Detention Centre and work with teaching staff and young people in classroom settings to inform planning and outcomes for students.
Working in a youth custodial setting requires resilience and flexibility, with trauma-informed approaches and an understanding of trauma-related impacts on learning.
Knowledge of learning disabilities and evidence-based practices to address gaps, and awareness of alternative education/training pathways, are desirable.
Responsibilities
• Work with SSEN:BE Youth Transition team to coordinate support for students involved in Youth Justice who are transitioning to education, training or employment.
• Strengthen relationships with Department of Justice to inform education and pathway planning for young people.
• Collect and share timely information to inform planning and decision making to improve student outcomes.
