About the Program

The Tasmanian Youth Climate Leadership Program aims to empower and ignite passion in young people to tackle climate change action in their schools and communities.

We aspire for the Program to be run by young people, for young people, and so encourage young people to apply for the position.

The 2026 Program will be run through Sustainable Living Tasmania (SLT) and is supported by the Tasmanian Government through Renewables, Climate and Future Industries Tasmania (ReCFIT) and the Tasmanian Community Fund (TCF). It centres on supporting students from primary schools, high schools, and colleges to learn about climate change, be inspired to take action, and be supported to plan climate-related practical projects to implement at their schools. The Program connects student teams with expert mentors, who support the students to implement their projects.

The Youth Climate Leadership Program Coordinator is mentored and supported by an experienced Program Supervisor. A Governance Committee, consisting of experienced representatives from SLT and the Department of Education, oversees the Program and provides direction and support to the coordinator.

About the role

With broad direction from the Governance Committee and support from the Program Supervisor, the Program Coordinator will:

* Promote the program to prospective schools, teachers, students, and mentors.
* Liaise with mentors, teachers and students, and support youth sustainability programs. This could include:
* Offering project grants (Bike as transport, Biodiversity, Waste Audit, Fix Fast Fashion), interactive workshops and webinars on climate advocacy, leadership and action
* Liaising with teachers to ensure projects link effectively with subject curriculum
* Supporting on-going 2025 projects, where appropriate
* Liaising with mentors
* Collaborating with schools, local council, environmental groups and youth groups
* Co-hosting climate action projects with established community programs
* Facilitating climate leadership training and skills-based programs(e.g. sustainable gardening, eco-entrepreneurship)
* Creating engaging social media campaigns (Instagram, Facebook, YouTube)
* Sharing success stories, student spotlights and event recaps on the SLT Program website
* Encouraging peer-to-peer promotion through student leaders’ networks
* Reporting to Governance Committee
* Plan and track expenditure to ensure it is allocated appropriately and remains within budget (requesting the Governance Committee change the budget if necessary).
* Monitor and evaluate the Program.
* Write reports about the Program to ReCFIT and TCF.

The Program Coordinator will attend Governance Committee meetings to report progress, discuss challenges, take advice, and request support from the Committee.

Timing

While this is a casual position, it may be extended beyond 2026. Conditions for extension will be discussed with the successful candidate within the first year of employment and will depend upon Program funding and the employee’s performance. The successful candidate must be available to start in early March 2026.
