Avant Law is a national specialist law firm looking for a Senior Associate to join our team in Sydney, working closely with the specialist Legal Team Manager and Head of Practice Legal and joining a team of purpose-driven lawyers. This is an opportunity for an experienced professional conduct / disciplinary lawyer to progress their career and join Avant Law's Professional Conduct Team. We seek a qualified solicitor experienced in defending professional conduct matters and undertaking coronial investigations / inquests with a genuine interest in mentoring the next generation of lawyers in this specialised area of law.
This is a full-time 12-month fixed term contract position based out of our Sydney office with hybrid working arrangements. We would also consider part-time arrangements, at 3-4 days per week.
Key responsibilities
* This role will see you deliver high quality, timely legal advice and services in respect of Professional Conduct matters to Avant Insurance claims managers and Avant's members.
* Provide oral and written legal advice to members and Avant Insurance claims managers concerning professional conduct and disciplinary matters including Medicare and Professional Service Reviews, matters before the Health Care Complaints Commission, NSW Civil and Administrative Tribunal (NCAT) proceedings, Medical Council of NSW, and Medical Board of Australia as well as coronial investigations / inquest matters.
* Represent members in legal proceedings, including preparing for and attending court, NCAT or inquiries and through clear and persuasive advocacy achieve the best outcome for the member.
* Assist with the supervision, mentoring and development of junior lawyers to enable career development for staff within the Avant Law team.
Qualifications & requirements
* A minimum of 5 years' PQE, with demonstrated post admission experience in professional conduct related litigation and coronial matters.
* Relevant tertiary legal qualifications, with a current unsupervised practising certificate as a Solicitor in NSW.
* Previous experience in conducting all phases of professional conduct cases.
* Demonstrated health law knowledge/ background.
* Excellent communication and time management skills.
* The ability to mentor and support junior team members.
* Good computer literacy and competency to work in an electronic document management environment.
* Proactive in developing relationships and understanding and balancing member, business and team requirements.
