Product Development Engineer
Brisbane (Australia) based - Relocation from NZ required
Full time on-site
Product-focused engineering role driving embedded software development, system performance, and delivery of next-generation electronic devices.
Role Overview
This opportunity sits within a highly innovative Med-tech environment focused on the design, refinement, and commercial delivery of sophisticated electronic products. With core architecture already established, this role centres on embedded software development, firmware optimisation, and system-level performance validation. You will be responsible for measuring and enhancing overall device performance, ensuring seamless hardware–firmware integration, and supporting products as they mature from prototype through to scalable manufacture. Operating within a structured quality and compliance framework, you will contribute across the full product lifecycle while helping ensure robust, reliable, and repeatable performance outcomes.
Key Responsibilities
* Design, develop, test, and refine embedded software for advanced electronic products.
* Modify and optimise firmware to enhance system-level performance and reliability.
* Define and execute performance testing against product specifications.
* Collaborate closely with hardware engineers to ensure strong system integration.
* Contribute across the full development lifecycle — requirements, design reviews, verification, validation, and manufacturing readiness.
* Develop structured test specifications, protocols, and technical documentation.
* Manage design change control, versioning, and ongoing product maintenance.
* Support design-for-manufacture activities alongside external partners.
* Identify technical risks and ensure issues are captured, communicated, and resolved.
* Maintain high-quality documentation aligned with internal governance frameworks.
* Contribute to continuous improvement and future product evolution.
Background & Experience
* Bachelor's degree in Engineering (Electronics, Computer Systems, Mechatronics, Biomedical, or similar technical discipline).
* Minimum three years' experience in new product development and embedded system architecture design.
* Demonstrated experience taking products from concept through to launch and ongoing lifecycle management.
* Strong capability in performance validation, verification testing, and structured technical reporting.
* Experience with formal test specification development and version-controlled environments.
* Commercial experience delivering at least one new product to market will be highly regarded.
* Strong written and verbal communication skills.
* Ability to collaborate effectively across cross-functional teams and external stakeholders.
Technical Expertise
* Embedded software development across microprocessors, DSPs, RTOS, and SoC platforms.
* Proficiency in C/C++, Embedded C, Python, and Embedded Linux.
* Strong understanding of embedded software development lifecycle and version control (Git).
* Experience with serial communication protocols (I2S, I2C, UART, SPI, PDM, PCM).
* Hands‐on experience with laboratory test equipment (oscilloscope, logic analyser, network analyser, pulse generator, power supply).
* Experience with sensor integration, wearable or compact electronic systems advantageous.
* Exposure to wireless protocols (e.g., Bluetooth, WiFi) and real‐time signal processing (IIR/FIR filters, PID control) beneficial.
Governance & Compliance Exposure
* Experience working within structured quality management environments.
* Familiarity with regulated product development frameworks and controlled documentation systems advantageous.
* Understanding of industry compliance standards relevant to electronic product development preferred.
