Materials & Process Engineer - Organic Materials
Onsite in Redmond, WA
About the Team
Our Materials and Systems Innovation (MSI) group's mission is to create and accelerate breakthrough materials and devices technologies development.
This enables us to unblock the path towards low cost and all day wearable devices.
To accomplish this, we identify key technology needs requiring breakthrough innovation, leverage external partners to accelerate research and prepare for technology transfer, and deliver high quality technology solutions through creating XFN high performing teams.
Seeking a world-class Materials & Process Engineer to join our team dedicated to shaping the future of virtual and augmented reality.
AR/VR is poised to become as ubiquitous as personal computers and smartphones, fundamentally transforming how we work, play, and connect.
We are developing the full spectrum of necessary technologies, including optics, displays, computer vision, haptic interaction, and perception science.
To achieve truly breakthrough AR glasses and VR headsets, we are heavily invested in fundamental materials research and development, including the design and characterization of Client materials for highly specific applications.
This role focuses on taking organic materials from initial concept all the way through to device integration.
The position requires a deep understanding of material processing, analysis, and the resulting impact on device performance.
Responsibilities
Drive the development of next-generation optoelectronic materials through advanced design, fabrication, and analysis to validate new concepts and assess their potential impact.
Collaborate cross-functionally with the broader Meta Reality Labs Research team to understand and address current goals, limitations, and bottlenecks within the wider AR/VR ecosystem.
Design and explore Client techniques for crystal growth, processing, and analysis, with a focus on specific components and devices.
Clearly communicate research results to both internal stakeholders and external partners.
Assist in transitioning research discoveries into practical applications for product development.
Minimum Qualifications
Bachelor's degree in Physics, Chemistry, Optical Science and Engineering, Electrical Engineering, or a relevant technical field.
2+ years of experience in at least one of the following areas: Chemistry; Materials Science (with a focus on organic materials); Crystallization and Nucleation; Solid State Analysis; Optoelectrical Materials.
2+ years of experience in experimental laboratory work, demonstrating the ability to translate and adapt concepts to a bench-top environment.
Preferred Qualifications
Experience with optical measurement and analysis (examples: refractometry and/or ellipsometry) is highly preferred.
Experience with solid-state analysis techniques (e.g., diffuse reflectance, XRD, spectroscopy, DSC, optical microscopy).
Experience utilizing crystallographic software suites (e.g., CCDC suite, BGMN, Profex, Olex2).
Experience with chromatographic techniques such as HPLC, LC-MS, and/or GC.
Experience working and communicating effectively in a cross-functional team setting.
Proven track record of significant achievement, demonstrated by grants, fellowships, patents, or first-authored publications in relevant high-impact journals.
