Financial Accountant
Full time – Permanent Role $51.42 per hour plus superannuation
Wodonga City Council is seeking a detail-oriented and values-driven Financial Accountant to support the delivery of accurate, transparent and compliant financial reporting across the organisation.
Working closely with the Manager Finance and Team Leader Financial Accounting, you will play a key role in preparing monthly, quarterly and annual financial reports, strengthening internal controls, and supporting audit and governance processes. Your work will directly contribute to informed decision-making, financial sustainability and strong public accountability.
Key Focus Areas
Financial Reporting and Compliance Prepare and coordinate monthly, quarterly and annual financial reports in accordance with Australian Accounting Standards and Victorian local government legislation. Provide clear financial analysis and commentary to support Executive and Council decision-making.Complex Accounting and Reconciliations Prepare, review and validate complex accounting worksheets and journal entries, including assets, leasing, accruals and depreciation. Perform detailed balance sheet reconciliations to maintain the integrity and accuracy of Council's general ledger.External Audit and Year-End Processes Support and lead components of the financial year-end process. Liaise with the Victorian Auditor-General's Office, prepare working papers and provide timely, high-quality responses to audit queries.Financial Governance and Continuous Improvement Review and enhance financial accounting policies, internal controls and systems. Identify opportunities to improve processes, strengthen compliance and reduce financial risk.Financial Advice and Stakeholder Engagement Provide specialist financial advice across the organisation and build financial literacy among stakeholders. Translate complex accounting concepts into clear and practical guidance for non-financial audiences.

You Will Bring
Tertiary qualifications in Accounting, Finance or a related discipline Minimum three years' experience in accounting or financial management Strong knowledge of Australian Accounting Standards and financial reporting requirements Experience supporting external audit processes Advanced analytical skills and attention to detail Excellent written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to present complex financial information clearly A collaborative approach and the ability to build strong working relationships across the organisation
