The Position

Assist the Executive Director Medical Services (EDMS) in the coordination, administration and evaluation of Agency wide aspects of Medical Services.

Responsible for ensuring that the recruitment, appointment, credentialing and employment of junior medical staff are consistent with legislative and Award provision.

Responsible for overseeing the recruitment and workforce planning for junior medical staff, selection and ongoing training requirements (Vocational and pre-vocational).

Responsible for overseeing the strategic development and improved partnership and communications with General Practice and the wider community health care providers.

Act in the position of EDMS as required, in addition to being delegated as required.


Health Service

The Launceston General Hospital is an accredited 450 bed teaching hospital and is the major referral hospital for Tasmania’s North and North-West. The hospital provides emergency and acute care, specialist services, inpatient and ambulatory care to Launceston and surrounding areas. Launceston General Hospital is the largest employer in the region with around 2,300 staff.

It aims to improve the health of the community through the provision of funding for innovative medical research, education of health professions, funding of medical equipment and patient facilities within the hospital. Its medical research program provides significant benefits for the people of the region.

Most importantly, all donations are spent in Northern Tasmania and used to provide doctors, nurses and other health professionals with unique medical research opportunities they would find difficult to get at other regional hospitals. The Location

The Department of Health Tasmania oversees various hospitals across the state, including the Royal Hobart Hospital, Launceston General Hospital, Northwest Regional Hospital, and Mersey Community Hospital, as well as district hospitals and ambulance services.

Additionally, it provides community health, mental health, and primary healthcare services to the Tasmanian community through more than 300 sites.

Selection Criteria

Clinical Leadership experience at a senior level in a tertiary, regional health service. or equivalent.

Holds or is working towards Fellowship of the Royal Australasian College of Medical Administrators (RACMA), or Associate Fellowship of RACMA (AFRACMA), or equivalent post-Graduate health management qualification(s).

Demonstrated experience and interest in the organisation and management of medical staff within a rapidly changing hospital environment with a client-centred and clinically driven management philosophy.

Sound knowledge of and experience in contemporary human resource management issues.

Demonstrated understanding of junior medical staff issues as they impact in a teaching hospital environment.

Demonstrated high level of interpersonal skills and ability to work with and lead other staff including the ability to work and liaise with other health professionals.

Demonstrated achievement of a high level of customer/patient focus by setting and monitoring standards and promoting an ethos of excellent patient/customer service.

Sound knowledge of the national and state health policy framework impacting on health service delivery in Tasmania.

Demonstrated understanding of legislation relevant to the position.


The Package

Specialist Medical Practitioner Level 1- Senior Specialist Medical Practitioner Level 3 $216,300 - $310,389 per annum, pro rata + 12% superannuation + access to salary packaging.

Please note that access to the Senior Specialist Medical Practitioner salary range $300,216 -$310,389 is subject to the successful applicant satisfying the criteria for Senior Specialist Medical Practitioner Level 1, 2 or 3 as outlined in the Medical Practitioners (Tasmanian State Service) Award.

In addition, the following allowances and benefit, calculated on the salaried incremental point may be available:

* Salary packaging options include a range of benefits like living expenses up to $9,010 and $2,650 in meals and entertainment every year.
* Provision of a fully maintained private plated motor vehicle or (Delete previous for part time SMP) motor vehicle allowance of $28,786 per annum, pro rata.
* Participation in Private Practice Scheme 35% or allowance in lieu of private practice schemes 35%.
* Continuing Professional Development Allowance of $16,974 per annum, pro rata.
* Travel and relocation assistance support available up to $15,000 for eligible appointees from overseas, and up to $10,000 for appointees from interstate.
* Professional development and accelerated pathways.
* A range of leave entitlements, including study leave and Professional Development Support.
* Fitness Passport – You, and your family can access 40+ fitness facilities across Tasmania for just $14.50 per week per person, or $28.05 for a family.
