**Who we are**
The Australian Antarctic Division (AAD) is part of the Commonwealth Department of Climate Change, Energy, the Environment and Water. As primary agency for Australia's Antarctic Program (AAP), the AAD is responsible for achieving the Australian Government's Antarctic goals.

These goals are to:

- maintain the Antarctic Treaty System and enhance Australia's influence within it
- protect the Antarctic environment
- understand the role of Antarctica in the global climate system
- undertake scientific work of practical, economic and national significance.

The AAD also has responsibility for administering the Australian Antarctic Territory and the Territory of Heard and McDonald Islands.

The Strategy and Communications Branch consists of three sections - the Risk and Business Continuity Section, the Governance and Strategy Section and the Media and Communications Section. The branch supports the AAD to strategically align its efforts across the division and within the broader department, operate to the highest standards within the department's governance frameworks, and communicate Australia's key role in Antarctica within the department, to Government and to the Australian public.

The Media and Communications Section supports the Australian Government's Antarctic priorities through communication with internal and external audiences. The section comprises media engagement, internal communications, web management, video production, graphic design and public engagement.

**The Job**
- Develop and deliver internal communication strategies, activities and outputs.
- Distil and translate complex business needs and information into audience-focused communications such as media content, stories, communiques, videos and scripts, forums, talking points, briefs, submissions etc.
- Manage, guide and support others to deliver internal communications in support of business aims.
- Identify opportunities to support the business through internal communications.
- Work closely with other AAD media and comms functions - web, graphic design, video and media - to deliver engaging and targeted communications.

**Please note** that this recruitment process is advertised as both an ongoing and non-ongoing position. If an offer of non-ongoing employment is made, the successful applicant would be employed for an initial period of 12 months with the possibility of extension up to a maximum period of 3 years in total. Should the non-ongoing position become ongoing then the merit pool established through this selection process, which is valid for a period of eighteen months from the date the vacancy was advertised in the Public Service Gazette, may be used to fill the vacancy on an ongoing basis.

**What we are looking for**

**Knowledge and experience**
- Experience of managing internal comms for an organisation.
- A proactive approach, sense for risk and ability to operate in a deadline-driven and political environment.
- Experience of operating effectively within the approval processes, systems and policies of a Government or bureaucratic organisation.

**Skills and capabilities**
- Excellent written, verbal and digital communication skills, used to manage and support organisational communications
- Ability to build the AAD strategic internal communications function across a range of platforms, channels and outputs in line with business aims
- Operate at a senior level, provide strategic communications advice and guidance, engage with stakeholders and use positive influence
- A can-do attitude, sound professional judgement and commitment to learning, seeking advice, sharing knowledge and responding positively to feedback.
- Ability to make sound decisions based on evidence to inform activities and outcomes.
- Build and sustain strong working relationships with key stakeholders, using expertise and engagement to build influence.

**Please note** that the successful applicant may be required to travel to the Antarctic and sub-Antarctic regions therefore they may be required to meet specific medical, adaptability and personal qualities requirements appropriate to working in those environments.

In order to undertake travel to the Antarctic & sub-Antarctic regions they will need to:

- demonstrate the range of personal qualities and interpersonal skills necessary to perform as a successful team member within isolated Antarctic and sub-Antarctic environments
- demonstrate an ability to effectively adapt and respond to the demands of living and working in an isolated and confined environment as determined by a psychological (adaptability) assessment
- be certified as fit for Antarctic service by the AAD's Polar Medicine Unit.
