Hyundai Rotem Company (HRC) was founded in 1977 and since that time, has been leading the industry globally by delivering critical national infrastructure in over 50 countries. A leader in the Korean rail industry, HRC has succeeded in developing high-speed trains and is now establishing their presence in the Australian market.
The Queensland Train Manufacturing Program (QTMP) – a project commissioning, designing and constructing a new manufacturing facility in Torbanlea Qld and a new maintenance facility in Ormeau Qld. It includes manufacturing and delivering 65 EMU Train sets (390 cars) by the end of 2031.
Combined local and international design teams and suppliers will work together to ensure the delivery of manufacturing requirements and associated documentation to ensure that train sets locally manufactured in Australia meet the design, compliance, manufacturability, reliability, maintainability and safety specifications for the trains operational life for a minimum of at least 35 years.
About the Opportunity
Hyundai Rotem is expanding its manufacturing capability as part of the QTMP project and is seeking an experienced Production Engineer to join the new manufacturing facility in Torbanlea.
This role is critical in supporting the successful Transfer of Technology (TOT) with HRC and Downer, and ensuring stable, high-quality series production for carbody and bogie assembly. As the Production Engineer, you will drive the optimisation of 4M processes (methods, tools, materials, manpower) and support the setup and continuous improvement of production stations. You will play a key role in ensuring design readiness, resolving production issues, and upholding high technical, quality and safety standards.
Key Responsibilities
* Implement and stabilise standard production processes in line with the Master Production Schedule.
* Conduct detailed time studies, identify bottlenecks and troubleshoot issues on the shopfloor.
* Create, review and update technical documents including work instructions, modification work instructions, welding sequences, WPS, tolerance documents and equipment requirements.
* Liaise closely with HRC Engineering and Methods using DIMA methodology to optimise designs.
* Support manufacturing readiness through the development of DILO (Day-in-the-Life) and 3P (Production Preparation Process) models.
* Validate manufacturing methods, tooling, jigs and processes for series production.
* Conduct production line balancing using Value Stream Mapping and similar improvement tools.
* Collaborate with cross-functional teams to ensure a smooth and coordinated introduction of design changes (configuration management).
* Support welder certification processes and welding technical matters.
* Respond to production Andon signals and resolve method-related issues to maintain production continuity.
* Drive Lean Manufacturing and Continuous Improvement as core aspects of the role.
* Ensure all operational activities meet Zero Harm and HSE standards.
Qualifications, Skills & Experience
* Qualifications in Industrial Engineering, Mechanical Engineering or a related discipline.
* 4–6 years' experience in stainless-steel rolling stock, carbody/bogie, or similar heavy manufacturing (welding & assembly).
* Strong knowledge of production engineering or methods engineering principles.
* Experience in resistance welding, MIG/MAG welding, and welding fixture/jig design.
* Understanding of welding standards (EN or AS).
* Experience applying DIMA or Value Improvement Process (VIP) methodologies.
* Familiarity with SAP or similar ERP systems.
* Basic knowledge of CATIA V6, AutoCAD (operation & modification).
* Proficiency with Microsoft Office software (Excel, PowerPoint, Word).
* Strong appreciation of multi-disciplinary engineering collaboration within a project environment.
