Monash University invites applications for a full-time PhD scholarship focused on reimagining architectural practice through artificial intelligence (AI), in partnership with JCB Architects. This unique, industry-embedded research opportunity is designed for candidates interested in exploring the integration of AI and machine learning (ML) technologies within professional architectural settings.
The successful applicant will be jointly based at JCB Architects' studio in Richmond and the Monash Caulfield campus, working closely with both practicing architects and the Future Building Initiative, a leading research group within the Faculty of Art, Design and Architecture.
Key Responsibilities
– Map and analyze current architectural design practices within a professional context
– Identify and develop opportunities for AI/ML integration to enhance creative decision-making
– Prototype and test digital tools in real-world practice environments
– Collaborate with designers, researchers, and technology experts
– Participate in research communities and contribute to academic dissemination
Candidate Requirements
– Background in architectural design, computational design, or a related discipline
– Strong interest in applied research, emerging technologies, and the future of architecture
– Demonstrated enthusiasm for sustainable and efficient design workflows
– Experience in practice-based research, including interviews, workshops, and digital prototyping
– Ability to produce written research outcomes for conferences and journals
– Strong computational skills and design sensitivity
– Portfolio showcasing relevant technical and design work, process documentation, and any research or professional experience
Application Process
Stage 1: Expression of Interest
– Submit an Expression of Interest via the Faculty of Art, Design and Architecture at Monash: Include a proposal demonstrating enthusiasm for AI/ML in architectural design, understanding of theoretical and practical implications, and innovative approaches to practice
Stage 2: Full Proposal
– Shortlisted candidates will be invited to discuss their ideas with the supervisory team and JCB representatives before submitting a full proposal
Eligibility
– Open to domestic applicants only (Australian Citizens/Permanent Residents)
– Fixed-term appointment for up to 3.5 years
– Tax-free stipend of $36,063 per annum (full-time rate)
