Use Your Applied Chemistry Knowledge in Defence Research Rare Opportunity to Work Alongside Australia's Top Scientists Onsite Parking and Excellent Facilities Located in Fishermans Bend THE CLIENT The Defence Science and Technology Group (DSTG) is part of Australia's Department of Defence and is the government's lead agency for delivering science and technology solutions to safeguard national interests. As a division of Defence, DSTG is at the forefront of scientific innovation in national security, with teams of leading experts working on cutting-edge research to support the Australian Defence Force. The Sensors and Effectors Division is a key capability area within DSTG, and this role will sit in the Chemical Detection Team, which supports the ADF's Land Combat Vehicle and Mobility program. THE ROLE This is a 12-month full-time contract position, with a suggested commencement on 1st July and with potential to extend for up to 12 months depending on project requirements. You will be employed by CS Executive Group and embedded in DSTG under a labour-hire arrangement. This is a laboratory-based role that provides a rare opportunity to work with a team of Australia's top scientists in support of defence capability development. The successful candidate will generate and process data on the performance of chemical detection systems used by the ADF, including detectors for chemical warfare agents (CWAs) and toxic industrial chemicals (TICs). You'll play a critical role in ensuring that detectors are evaluated rigorously for operational deployment. KEY RESPONSIBILITIES Support validation and testing of chemical detection systems. Operate, maintain, calibrate, and troubleshoot a range of chemical instrumentation. Assist with data collection, processing, and formatting for inclusion in scientific reports and briefings. Participate in method development and contribute to laboratory safety documentation and SOPs. Safely handle hazardous substances under supervision, including highly toxic materials. Accurately record experimental work in laboratory notebooks to DSTG standards. Contribute to day-to-day laboratory upkeep and team meetings. SELECTION CRITERIA To be considered, you MUST be an Australian citizen and able to obtain and maintain a Negative Vetting Level 1 (NV1) Security Clearance. You will also demonstrate: A Bachelor's Degree or higher in Chemistry or a related field. Practical experience working in an applied or analytical chemistry laboratory. Proficiency in operating and maintaining chemical instrumentation such as: Mass Spectrometry Gas Chromatography Fourier Transform Infrared Spectroscopy Ultraviolet-Visible Spectroscopy Photoionisation Detectors (PIDs) and Other chemical detection tools Demonstrated ability to interpret scientific data and prepare reports or presentations. Experience safely handling hazardous substances (gases, liquids, vapours) and compressed gases. Familiarity with WHS regulations and laboratory risk assessments. Ability to work in a team-oriented environment with a methodical, safety-first approach. Willingness to wear PPE, including a full-face respirator, and complete necessary safety training.
