Acute & Critical Care Senior Resident Medical Officer, Belmont Hospital (Hunter New England Local Health District)

Employment Type: Temporary Full Time (1-2 years)

Remuneration: $89,095.00 - $120,489.00 (depending on experience and as per the Medical Officer Award)

Location: Belmont Hospital, Lake Macquarie – part of Hunter New England Local Health District.

Belmont Hospital is a 150‑bed acute facility with a busy Emergency Department, inpatient wards (CCU/COU, Medical, Surgical, Sub‑Acu­te, Transition to Residential Aged Care – TRAC), 4 Operating Theatres, several Outpatient clinics, Pharmacy, on‑site Imaging & Pathology and a Lakeview Detoxification Unit. It holds accreditation by several specialty Colleges and is a teaching facility for the University of Newcastle's Joint Medical Program.

What You’ll Be Doing

Provide medical services and gain supervised experience in the management of acutely ill patients in an urban non‑tertiary setting. Training will occur prior to undertaking accredited specialty training and will involve work in one or more acute areas of the hospital, such as:

- The Coronary Care Unit (CCU) / Close Observation Unit (COU): 8‑bed unit with telemetry, non‑invasive ventilation, short‑term vasopressor capabilities, and CCON cameras, under the supervision of on‑site and/or on‑call specialist consultants.
- Emergency Department (ED): approximately 30,000 presentations yearly, staffed by FACEMs, CMOs, trainees, JMOs and nurse practitioners, with ACEM accreditation.
- Anesthetics Department: 4 operating theatres (case mix includes general surgery, orthopaedics, ENT, urology, plastics) with specialist anaesthetists rotating from John Hunter Hospital; ANZCA accreditation.
- General Medicine Department: four acute teams staffed by specialist physicians and SRMOs, accredited by HETI and RACP.

Upon completion of the Acute & Critical Care SRMO year, doctors will be well positioned to apply for critical care specialty training (Anaesthesia, Emergency Medicine, Intensive Care) or other training programs such as Medicine, General Practice or Rural Generalism.

While working under direct or indirect supervision by specialist consultants, doctors will have opportunities to prefer rotations/departments according to career aspirations, including:

- Acute Care Stream – Close Observation Unit, ED & Acute General Medicine.
- Critical Care Stream – Anesthesia, Close Observation Unit & ED.
- Mixed Acute & Critical Care Stream.

Essential Criteria

- MBBS or equivalent, current general registration with the Medical Board of Australia.
- Completed a minimum of 3‑4 years of full‑time clinical work with recent experience in Australian healthcare settings.
- Completion of recent critical care terms and relevant courses/workshops.
- Vaccination evidence required for NSW Health employees as per policy.

Selection Criteria

- Demonstrated knowledge, skills and attention to detail in caring for complex patients in critical care settings, including ICU, ED, or anaesthetics terms.
- Competency in or planned enrolment in ALS‑2, ICU BASIC, EMST, ATLS, APLS or similar courses.
- Motivation to take on new challenges: reflection, learning, quality improvement, teaching, leadership, advocacy.
- Strong communication skills with patients, families and health professionals.
- Proven record of flexible, skilled, compassionate practice.
- Teamwork ability within multidisciplinary teams.
