Design & Development Engineer – Electrical / EEHA
Inlex is part of the Elemera group of companies. We specialise in the design, manufacture, inspection, and support of electrical equipment for use in potentially explosive atmospheres (EEHA).
Our work is highly technical, safety‑critical, and strongly governed by quality and compliance requirements. Inlex holds IECEx certification for Inspection & Maintenance and Repair & Overhaul of hazardous‑area electrical equipment, and we design and manufacture a growing range of portable and modular EEHA products supplied across Australia and internationally.
Despite the seriousness of what we do, we foster a supportive, collaborative, and down‑to‑earth working environment where people enjoy coming to work, help each other succeed, and take pride in doing good engineering well.
The role
We are seeking a Design & Development Engineer to join our product development team, with a strong focus on electrical design, EEHA compliance, and technical documentation.
This role will play a key part in supporting new product development, bespoke customer‑specific engineering work, and continual improvement across our product range and engineering systems. The position is hands‑on and detail‑oriented, and suited to an engineer who enjoys turning complex requirements into clear, compliant, buildable designs.
The role reports to the Product Development Manager and works closely with mechanical design, production, quality, and operations teams.
Key responsibilities
Electrical design & drafting (core focus)
* Design electrical systems for portable and modular EEHA equipment, including system architecture, component selection, protection philosophy, and installation requirements.
* Prepare and maintain electrical documentation including schematics, wiring diagrams, single‑line diagrams, cable schedules, drawings, calculations, and bills of materials.
* Act as a technical reference within the electrical discipline, providing guidance on design decisions, standards interpretation, and compliance requirements as needed.
* Review and interpret prototype and test results, and ensure findings are documented and incorporated into final design releases.
Quality & product documentation
* Develop and maintain engineering documentation such as Inspection & Test Record (ITR) templates and inspection checklists aligned with product design and compliance requirements.
* Collate and manage product documentation including datasheets, certificates, instructions, compliance evidence, and technical files.
* Assist in developing and maintaining structured product dossier templates to support manufacturing, certification, and audit readiness.
* Ensure electrical design and product documentation is complete, accurate, approved, and readily available to support efficient manufacturing, inspection, testing, certification, and ongoing support.
Prototype, workshop and operations support
* Provide hands‑on support during prototype builds, testing, troubleshooting, and commissioning activities as required.
* Provide technical support to production and field technicians to resolve design, technical, or installation issues.
* Assist with configuration or programming of devices such as PLCs, barriers, protection devices, or instrumentation where required.
Systems & integration support
* Support the ongoing development and integration of engineering data within CAD/PDM, ERP, and related business systems from an electrical engineering perspective.
* Drive improvements in the consistency, traceability, and usability of electrical design data across the business.
Safety, quality & compliance
* Ensure all work complies with applicable standards, including the IEC 60079 series, AS/NZS 3000, and relevant IECEx requirements.
* Uphold Inlex's commitment to health, safety, environmental, and quality management systems.
About you
Essential
* Demonstrated experience working with electrical equipment for hazardous areas (EEHA).
* Degree qualification in Electrical Engineering, Instrumentation, Control & Automation, Mechatronics, or a closely related discipline.
* Strong drafting skills (AutoCAD).
* Strong practical experience in electrical design and documentation for industrial or safety‑critical equipment.
* High level of attention to detail and a methodical approach to design, documentation, and compliance.
* Strong time‑management skills, with the ability to plan, prioritise, and manage multiple tasks and deadlines.
* A strong sense of ownership for assigned engineering work, with the ability to see tasks through from definition to completion.
* Ability to work autonomously while collaborating effectively within a multidisciplinary team.
* Clear written and verbal communication skills, particularly for technical documentation.
Desirable (but not essential)
* Experience with IECEx certification processes or hazardous‑area product dossiers.
* Familiarity with PLCs, instrumentation, and intrinsically safe systems.
* Experience or working knowledge of functional safety principles and systems.
* Experience supporting manufacturing, prototyping, or workshop activities.
* Exposure to CAD/PDM systems (ideally Autodesk Vault) and ERP/MRP environments.
* Experience working within an ISO 9001‑accredited organisation.
Our products & work
You will work across a diverse range of portable, modular, and bespoke EEHA equipment, including:
* Low‑voltage electrical distribution equipment (DBs, leads, splitters, temporary power systems).
* Electrical and control systems integrating instrumentation, intrinsically safe systems, gas detection, alarms, protection devices, PLCs, and Ex d / Ex e enclosures.
* Motor‑driven and process equipment such as pumps, fans, air‑handling, and other electrically powered machinery for hazardous areas.
* Bespoke customer‑specific electrical systems and assemblies designed to meet unique site, operational, and compliance requirements.
What we can offer
* Permanent full‑time role (38 hours per week) in a Perth metro location.
* Opportunity to work on technically challenging, safety‑critical products with real‑world impact.
* Exposure to a wide range of EEHA equipment and certification activities.
* A supportive team environment that values good engineering, clear documentation, and continual improvement.
* Flexible working arrangements by agreement after probation.
* The stability and opportunities of working within a multi‑disciplinary group of businesses.
