We’re partnering with a well‑established general insurer to appoint a Legal Counsel into their Melbourne‑based in‑house team.
This is a broad, hands‑on role working closely with a highly regarded Head of Legal & Company Secretary, supporting legal advisory across the business while playing a key role in regulatory, commercial and governance matters.
Main focus areas:
* Provide pragmatic legal advice to senior stakeholders across the business
* Support AFS licensing obligations and broader financial services regulatory compliance
* Draft, review and negotiate commercial contracts with third parties and suppliers
* Advise on Corporations Act, insurance legislation and Australian Consumer Law
* Liaise with regulators including APRA, ASIC and AFCA
* Support legal aspects of projects, submissions and business initiatives
* Work closely with Risk & Governance on cross‑functional matters
* Drive continuous improvement across legal processes, workflows and knowledge management
The ideal candidate:
* Australian qualified lawyer with an unrestricted practising certificate
* 2 – 5 PQE (flexible) across financial services, insurance or corporate/commercial law
* Strong understanding of regulatory frameworks (AFSL, Corporations Act, insurance)
* Ability to translate technical legal advice into clear, commercial outcomes
* Confident stakeholder manager with strong communication skills
* Comfortable working autonomously in a lean, collaborative team
