Role Overview

Mental Health Practitioner (MHP) at Greensborough College. The role is carried out in collaboration with the Department of Education Regional Mental Health Branch and focuses on enhancing student mental health and wellbeing within the school environment.

Responsibilities

  • Enhance mental health prevention and promotion activities by contributing to whole‐school health and wellbeing plans, building the capability of teaching staff and school leadership, and developing and delivering appropriate programs and strategies in line with school priorities.
  • Provide early intervention services, including short‐term counselling, for individual students and groups identified as at‐risk or experiencing mild to moderate mental health concerns.
  • Coordinate supports for students with complex needs both within and outside the school, liaising proactively with regional and local mental health service providers and other health professionals to engage further support as required.
  • Provide advice and professional learning to teachers and other school wellbeing staff, building the capacity of schools to improve students' wellbeing, learning and developmental outcomes.
  • Plan and implement evidence‐based intervention strategies for students with complex needs, collaborating with families, other professionals and agencies when appropriate to manage risk.
  • Collaborate with other department areas (including secondary school nurses and Student Support Services staff) and external providers to deliver appropriate support to students.
  • Maintain professional competence through continued professional development, attending training activities throughout the year.
  • Ensure compliance with relevant policies and legislative requirements concerning student health information, privacy and consent.

Qualifications & Requirements

A minimum of the following qualifications, registrations and experience is required:

  • Qualified psychologist, social worker, mental health nurse, occupational therapist or counsellor of a prescribed class.
  • Full registration with AHPRA for psychologists, mental health nurses, occupational therapists; membership with relevant professional associations for social workers, counsellors (Australian Association of Social Workers, Australian Counselling Association, Psychotherapy and Counselling Federation of Australia).
  • Specialisation in educational and/or developmental psychology for psychologists.
  • Post‐graduate qualification in mental health for mental health nurses.
  • Mental Health Nurse Credential and membership with the Australian College of Mental Health Nurses for mental health nurses.
  • Accredited Social Worker Trade Mark for social workers.
  • Better Access to Mental Health Endorsement for occupational therapists.
  • Level 3‐4 registration (ACA) or Registered Clinical Counsellor endorsement (PACFA) for counsellors.
  • Demonstrated direct counselling experience.
  • Current Working With Children Check.
  • Ability to work autonomously with minimal supervision within an educational setting.
