The Safety Advisor plays a key role in supporting the facilitation, promotion, and ownership of a strong safety culture across the Projects. This short term contract position supports the busiest phase of project delivery by providing structured guidance in the implementation of workplace safety policies, ensuring compliance with rail safety requirements and WHS obligations, and contributing to initiatives that drive safe work practices and continuous improvement
Role Accountabilities
• Support Safety Culture – Assist the Safety Manager and Project Teams to strengthen a positive WHS and rail safety culture
• Implement Policies and Procedures – Support the rollout of approved safety policies, procedures, and systems to ensure safe work environments across project sites.
• Incident Investigation & Reporting – Work collaboratively with Project Teams, the Principal Contractor, and external stakeholders on Rail Safety and WHS incident investigations.
• Safeworking Documentation – Review and monitor safeworking documents for accuracy, compliance, and alignment with statutory and project requirements.
• Hazard & Near-Miss Management – Conduct hazard and near miss reporting, support corrective actions, and share key learnings
• Coordination of Safety Resources – Collaborate with safety personnel across internal and contracted workforce to deliver consistent and coordinated safety services.
• Regulatory Compliance Support – Engage with business units, contractors, and peers to develop practical, compliant safety solutions.
• Audits & Field Observations – Assist with field safety observations, audits, and inspections to verify compliance and identify improvement opportunities.
• Maintain Legislative & Industry Knowledge – Continually update knowledge of WHS legislation, rail safety legislation, and industry best practice.
• Monitor Safe Working Practices – Review safe working practices to ensure reliability, compliance, and consistency across projects.
• Support Consultation Processes – Contribute to effective WHS consultation processes in line with legislative and organisational requirements.
Skills and experience required
Essential Selection Criteria
• Safeworking experience in a live rail operating environment
• Knowledge of systemic investigation and reporting methodologies
• Knowledge of WHS legislation, relevant standards, codes of practice
• Knowledge or awareness of Rail Safety legislation
• Demonstrated commitment to safety and understanding of safety systems
• Understanding of safety management systems
• Strong interpersonal and influencing skills
• Current driver's licence
• Experience in a rail industry discipline
• Understanding of rail industry operations
• Certificate IV OHS or Diploma in WHS
