The Environment Protection Authority Victoria (EPA) is Victoria's independent environmental regulator. EPA works to prevent and reduce the harmful effects of pollution and waste on Victorians and their environment, collaborating with community, government, and industry to achieve its objectives. Over the past five years, EPA has undergone significant transformation with the Environment Protection Act 2017 coming into effect on 1 July 2021. As the needs of Victorians evolve, EPA adapts and responds to various factors, embracing new ways of working and celebrating diversity of people and lifestyles. The organisation offers a range of practical support options for both work and personal life, fostering an inclusive culture where employees can make a meaningful impact on protecting Victoria's environment and public health.

Reporting directly to the Chief Executive Officer, the Chief Environmental Scientist is EPA's most senior science role and a key member of the executive leadership team. This position leads the Science Division, a multidisciplinary team that provides innovative, targeted and authoritative scientific advice to inform policy, regulation, and decision-making.

As the organisation's principal scientific advisor, you will:

* Set the standard for scientific excellence and innovation across EPA.
* Provide expert advice to the CEO, Minister, Board and senior stakeholders.
* Represent EPA and the Victorian Government as the authoritative voice on environmental science and environmental public health.
* Lead a team delivering science that addresses critical issues such as air, land, water, noise, odour, waste, emerging contaminants, and public health.
* Build partnerships with academia, government, industry, and the community to advance knowledge and practice.

This role is central to ensuring EPA achieves its vision of preventing harm to the environment and human health as a modern, science-based regulator. To be successful in this role you will be a highly regarded scientific leader with a doctorate or relevant postgraduate qualifications in environmental science, environmental public health, or a related discipline.

With recognised expertise and credibility in your field, you bring:

* A proven record of achievement as a senior executive leading large, multidisciplinary teams through change.
* Experience providing authoritative advice in complex, high-stakes policy and regulatory environments.
* Strong media and public engagement skills, able to translate science for diverse audiences.
* The ability to inspire, empower and mentor staff, fostering a culture of excellence, collaboration, and integrity.
* Sophisticated strategic thinking and governance capabilities

This is a rare opportunity to influence environmental outcomes at the highest level in Victoria. You will be joining an organisation that values purpose, integrity, and innovation, and you will play a critical role in protecting the health and environment of current and future generations.
