Engineering technologist – Telecommunications sector Location: Waterloo Corner (Adelaide, South Australia) (with travel to project sites) Salary – negotiable in the range $75k to $85k plus superannuation per annum About our client Kogan People Solutions recruiters are delighted to be working with a leading South Australian multi-service provider, who are a key delivery partner for major national clients, including NBN, Telstra, Downer, and Fulton Hogan, trusted to build, maintain, and commission critical network infrastructure.
Services include complex telecommunications builds (Fibre, HFC, Copper) They pride themselves on quality, agility, and an unwavering commitment to safety and technical excellence.
2. Position Summary The Engineering Technologist is a key technical authority within our client responsible for bridging the gap between high-level engineering design and practical, on-site implementation.
This role ensures all telecommunications and construction projects are executed to the precise technical standards of their partners (e.g., NBN, Telstra) and in full compliance with all Australian regulations.
You will be the primary technical resource for project teams, applying engineering principles to solve complex problems, guarantee quality, and ensure the integrity of network and construction builds.
The role is full time and ongoing.
3. Key Responsibilities Technical Planning Design Application Interpret and translate complex engineering blueprints, schematics, and designs from clients (e.g., NBN "As-Built" drawings) into actionable field plans for installation and construction crews.
Conduct technical site surveys to identify and mitigate potential constructability issues, ensuring plans are viable.
Plan and validate technical aspects of network builds, including fibre cable routes, HFC node segmentation, and copper network remediation.
Review and interpret civil/structural plans for new housing foundations, verifying compliance with engineering specifications and building codes.
Assist the project management team in developing technical specifications for project bids and tenders.
Quality Assurance Compliance Act as the primary guardian of technical standards; conduct field audits and inspections to ensure all work meets NBN, Telstra, and Australian Standards (e.g., AS/NZS ****, AS/CA S009).
Develop and implement quality assurance checklists and procedures for both network and civil projects.
Manage the collation and verification of technical documentation, including test results (OTDR, TDR, signal leakage), red-line drawings, and "as-built" submissions.
Sign off on technical acceptance criteria, confirming project segments are completed to the client's satisfaction before handover.
Complex Problem-Solving Field Support Serve as the key escalation point (e.g., Level 3 support) for complex technical issues that field technicians cannot resolve.
Diagnose and lead the remediation of network-wide performance faults, such as signal interference, high attenuation, and HFC noise.
Provide expert technical guidance to civil construction teams on foundation work, ensuring material and method compliance.
Develop and document standard remediation procedures for common, high-level faults.
Stakeholder Supplier Liaison Liaise directly with client-side engineers and technical officers (e.g., at NBN, Downer) to resolve design queries and technical conflicts.
Provide authoritative technical advice and regular progress updates to internal stakeholders.
Evaluate new equipment, tools, and materials from suppliers to ensure they meet technical and quality requirements.
4. Qualifications Experience To be considered we expect to see: - Bachelor's Degree in a highly relevant field of study Minimum 1, preferably more years of experience in a similar technical role within the Australian telecommunications industry in addition to other professional experience earned since graduation.
Demonstrated, hands-on experience with NBN, Telstra, or other carrier network infrastructure (e.g., HFC, FTTP, FTTN, Copper).
In-depth knowledge of telecommunications testing equipment and principles (e.g., OTDR, signal level meters, TDR).
Strong understanding of Australian Standards and telecommunications regulations.
Valid Australian Driver's Licence.
Valid White Card (General Construction Induction).
Unrestricted rights to work full time in Australia Applicants will also be able to demonstrate Relevant industry certifications (e.g., NBN-specific accreditations, Open Cabling Registration).
Project management or coordination experience.
