Achieve Something Great
The Male Aboriginal Health Worker – Palliative and Cancer Care supports stronger connections between Aboriginal communities and the public health system. In this role, you will support Aboriginal patients and their families through cancer treatment and palliative care, ensuring services are culturally safe, respectful and responsive.
You will work in a community setting as well as within a public hospital setting, providing culturally informed support that recognises the importance of family, culture and social and emotional wellbeing, particularly during serious illness, grief and loss.
Key responsibilities:
- Provide culturally safe support to Aboriginal patients and families accessing cancer treatment and palliative care.
- Work with multidisciplinary clinical teams to ensure care reflects cultural needs, family connections and wellbeing.
- Identify health and social support needs and link patients with appropriate hospital and community services.
- Support Aboriginal men, women and families during serious illness, bereavement and grief.

You will demonstrate:
* Strong cultural knowledge and understanding of Aboriginal communities and families.
* Experience in case management, including assessing needs and coordinating referrals.
* An understanding of issues affecting Aboriginal people, including grief, loss and social and emotional wellbeing.
* Strong communication and relationship building skills.
* A respectful, empathetic approach when supporting patients and families during challenging times.
Selection Criteria

* Cert IV Aboriginal & Torres Strait Islander Health Care or other relevant qualification and/or relevant experience working within Aboriginal Health services and a willingness to obtain the relevant qualification.
* Demonstrated ability to understand and respond to the health, social and cultural needs of Aboriginal people and families, and support the development of culturally safe and practical care approaches.
* Demonstrated ability to work collaboratively with others, including supporting colleagues or service providers to deliver culturally responsive care and build cultural understanding.
* Applicants must possess an Australian C-Class driver's license (including P1 or P2). Those who hold a C class license (P1 or P2 included) from a state other than NSW must obtain a NSW C class (P1 or P2 included) license within three months of appointment. Learner's licenses are not permitted.
