Your new role
As the Senior Backend Engineer, you will take responsibility for designing and delivering modern API‑driven backend services built on AWS serverless technologies. Your work will involve creating secure and governed API endpoints, re‑engineering legacy logic into a contemporary architecture, and developing backend components that interact with a unified PostgreSQL data store on Amazon RDS. You will help define integration patterns, support enterprise workflows, and ensure the platform meets stringent operational, security, and compliance expectations.
What you'll need to succeed
* Strong background building backend services within AWS serverless environments.
* Proficiency in developing AWS Lambda functions using (JavaScript/TypeScript) and/or Python, with Java experience considered advantageous.
* Deep understanding of AWS Lambda, API Gateway, IAM, KMS, CloudTrail, CloudWatch, Secrets Manager, and VPC networking.
* Advanced SQL capability and hands‑on experience with PostgreSQL, including performance tuning, indexing, and serverless connection strategies.
* Demonstrated ability to design secure REST APIs with strong validation, versioning, and error‑handling practices.
* Experience working with event‑driven services such as SQS, SNS, EventBridge, and Step Functions.
* Knowledge of AWS‑native governance and security controls for managing sensitive data.
* Strong understanding of privacy, audit, and compliance requirements for regulated systems.
* Ability to design backend logic for complex workflows and integrate with internal and external data sources.
* Experience with CI/CD pipelines and Infrastructure‑as‑Code for automated deployments.
* Strong analytical skills and the ability to work across both legacy and modern technology stacks.
* Highly regarded experience includes: enterprise system integration, migration from monolithic or Oracle‑based platforms, supporting modern frontend frameworks such as, and working in compliance‑heavy or safety‑critical environments.
* Additional desirable exposure includes public sector transformation programs, metadata‑driven architectures, AWS governance tooling, domain knowledge in human services or transport, and familiarity with AI‑assisted development tools or documentation‑as‑code practices.
