Primary objective
Deliver high-level strategic media, communications, and engagement leadership to support departmental priorities and build public
confidence. Provide strategic advice to executives and staff and oversee media relations - including opportunities and risks -
internal and external communications, branding, and community engagement advice. Provide expert writing, editing, and
proofreading services to ensure clear and effective communication across all channels.
Context statement
The Department of Corrections provides custodial and community supervision of adults and young people in the Northern
Territory. The successful candidate must demonstrate the ability to work with minimal supervision and lead a multi-disciplinary
team to manage competing priorities in a dynamic, high-pressure, and changing environment.
Key duties and responsibilities
1. Provide high-level strategic advice on media and communications to executives and staff, including risk and reputation
management.
2. Manage the delivery of communications and marketing projects, including planning, logistics, resource allocation and
consideration of media, political and stakeholder implications to meet the objectives and strategic directions of the Department.
3. Provide professional communications services to ensure clear and accessible information is available to staff, business,
stakeholders, and community.
4. Coordinate marketing and communication programs to deliver effective services consistent with NT Government procurement
and policy guidelines.
5. Lead the development and implementation of proactive and reactive media strategies, including issues and crisis
communications planning and response.
6. Lead, manage and develop a team of communications and media professionals, as well as oversee the work of consultants,
creative suppliers, and vendors.
Selection criteria
Essential
1. Extensive experience and knowledge of contemporary strategic communications, media, and public relations, including crisis
communications.
2. Practical knowledge of communication and marketing tools and processes, including diverse channels for community
consultation and engagement, and communications strategies.
3. Proven ability to manage and develop staff, contractors and projects, including resource allocation, strategic priorities, and risk
management in a fast-paced, high-pressure environment.
4. Advanced writing and communications skills, including proofreading, editing and an ability to translate technical information
into plain English.
5. High-level interpersonal and stakeholder engagement skills with the ability to build trust and maintain effective relationships
across diverse audiences.
6. Proven ability to exercise sound judgment and apply strategic and lateral thinking to resolve issues in a politically sensitive
environment.
7. Demonstrated strong client focus with proven experience in leading and motivating a work group to achieve common objectives
in a dynamic, changing environment with competing priorities.
Desirable
1. Tertiary qualification in a communications, media and journalism, marketing, or similar field.
2. High-level knowledge of the economic, political, and social issues impacting Government.
3. Experience in government policies, procedures, and systems.
