About the Organization
Anyinginyi Health Aboriginal Corporation (AHAC) is a multi-disciplinary organisation that provides primary health care services to the Aboriginal people of Tennant Creek and the surrounding Barkly region. The organisation is dedicated to 'Closing the Gap' in Aboriginal health within remote Australia.
Anyinginyi Health comprises four sections: Health Services, Business Services, Public Health Unit, and Piliyintinji-Ki Stronger Families. This holistic approach ensures that clients' physical and emotional health and wellbeing are given the utmost priority.
Mission: To be a provider of high-quality holistic primary health care services featuring prevention and treatment in the Barkly region in a culturally responsive way.
The Tennant Creek Region
Located 500km north of Alice Springs, Tennant Creek is a modern town with a major regional hospital, university, schools, shops, supermarkets, accommodation, bars, clubs, restaurants, banking facilities, sporting clubs, and an airport. The region offers year-round blue skies, stunning landscapes, and vibrant, diverse communities.
About the Role
Anyinginyi Health seeks a full‐time Aboriginal Identified Tackling Indigenous Smoking (TIS) Support Officer – Female to join the Kalpa Purru Wirranjarlki Public Health Services Section.
In consultation with the community, you will be part of a small team responsible for developing, promoting, and undertaking a range of evidence‐based resources and activities to reduce smoking uptake, promote smoke‐free spaces, and support smoking cessation in Aboriginal communities across the Barkly region.
Strategies will focus on community engagement and the development of responsive, flexible, population‐based, and preventative health approaches to tobacco use. Your work will enhance community understanding of the effects of tobacco on overall and long‐term health outcomes for Aboriginal people in the Barkly region.
Duties
* Support ongoing development, coordination and facilitation of positive engagement, interventions and activities in line with the TIS program guidelines and organisational policies.
* Assist the Team Leader and Communications & Education Officer with regional smoking prevention campaigns, community events, forums and information sharing that promote tobacco awareness, cessation and smoke‐free environments.
* Proactively develop sustainable and respectful networks with communities across the Barkly Region.
* Support the National Best Practice Unit (NBPU) by identifying, developing and delivering smoking prevention and cessation social marketing campaigns.
* Uphold the organisation's vision, mission and priorities as determined by the Board of Directors and outlined in the Strategic Plan.
* Identify and manage risks or potential risks to clients to reduce immediate concerns.
* Ensure all program material and content is up‐to‐date, appropriate, relevant and engaging for the target audience.
* Carry out administrative duties, including report writing and electronic client data record management, in accordance with program and organisational expectations.
* Contribute to a professional and culturally safe work environment.
* Promote and support alcohol, tobacco, and other drug‐free workplace strategies and exemplify aligned behaviours.
* Collaborate with key stakeholders—including community, government and not‐for‐profit agencies—representing and advocating for Anyinginyi and the TIS program at all times.
* Work within confidentiality and privacy limits appropriate to the TIS program.
* Participate in staff training and development, organisation‐wide team meetings, collaborative planning activities and other relevant meetings or activities.
* Contribute to the continuous improvement of systems and processes, including work health and safety, to ensure programs and services meet professional and industry standards.
* Travel to remote communities.
About You
This is an Aboriginal Identified position; you must be of Aboriginal or Torres Strait Islander descent.
Prior to commencement you must obtain an Ochre Card (NT Working with Children's card) and a National Police Clearance.
Essential Skills and Experience
* Minimum Certificate III in Aboriginal Health or equivalent (or willingness to undertake training).
* Experience working in Aboriginal community health or welfare services and ability to support the delivery of culturally responsive programs and services.
* Well‐developed interpersonal skills and ability to develop and maintain effective networks and relationships with diverse Aboriginal community groups.
* Demonstrated task completion for community forums or events with due dates.
* Strong communication skills for reporting and informing a multi‐disciplinary team and guiding non‐Aboriginal staff.
* Knowledge and use of Microsoft Office applications such as Word and Excel.
* Capability to work as part of a team.
* Current NT driver's licence.
Desirable
* Experience and knowledge of the Tennant Creek and Barkly Region.
* Knowledge of the Barkly Region and experience working with Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people.
* 4WD training.
