Working as a Patient Care Assistant (PCA) you will be part of an integral multi-disciplinary team providing a high standard of care for patients in the areas of patient care, patient transport and support of the nursing/midwifery care team as directed. The Patient Care Assistant carries out their duties as directed by, and under the supervision of, a Registered Nurse/Midwife.

Position Requirements

* All direct patient care is carried out under the direction and supervision of Registered Nurse/Midwife/Enrolled Nurses.
* Liaises with the Registered Nurse/Midwife/Enrolled Nurse at all times and observes and reports all matters relevant to the wellbeing of the patient.
* Perform manual handling of patients under supervision of Registered Nurse/Midwife/Enrolled Nurses.
* Maintains confidentiality, privacy and dignity of patients and demonstrates empathy and sensitivity towards patients and relatives.
* Understand role in an emergency and follow direction of the coordinator.
* Maintain safe environment for patient contributing to patient comfort needs.
* Contribute to an efficient and timely patient admission, transfer and discharge process.
* Assist Registered Nurse/Midwife/Enrolled Nurses in care of deceased patients.
* Maintain tidiness and cleanliness of the area including Nurses station, treatment and pan rooms and storage areas and undertakes restocking of supplies and linen as directed by the Registered Nurse/Midwife.
* Contribute to an efficient and timely patient admission, transfer and discharge process.
* Utilise appropriate formal and informal channels of communication.
* Respond to patient's needs/call bells and implement prompt appropriate action or referral to the Registered Nurse/Midwife/Enrolled Nurse.
* Liaise with nursing caregivers to ensure patients receive appropriate diet/meals and appropriate patient dietary needs are met.
* Adhere to all applicable St John of God Health Care policies and guidelines.
* Report all incidents / hazards / injuries.
* Raise OHS issues with appropriate caregivers and take part in OHS training & consultative arrangements.

You will have Certificate III in Health Service Assistant (Client/Patient Services) or similar; or currently studying in a health-related field at a tertiary level and demonstrate well-developed communication and interpersonal skills.

To succeed you will have ability to work with minimal supervision and ability to identify work priorities and plan to meet them and demonstrate effectiveness in working in a team environment.
