The Family Engagement Officer is a key role within Bimberi, designed to assist with the engagement of young people, their families and community and to promote Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander practices and perspectives, in the day-to-day functions of the Centre. The position plays a key role in maintaining a safe, healthy, caring and supportive environment for young people with a strong focus on promoting Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander cultures, protocols and practices. The Family Engagement Officer supports all young people in the centre to establish and maintain their connection to family, kin, community, and culture, by ensuring that practice aligns with the 5 core elements of the Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander Child Placement Principle. The position will strive to achieve this by encouraging self-determination for young people and their families, through partnership and participation, to assist in developing culturally safe ways of ensuring the young person is connected to mob and country whilst in custody. The Family Engagement Officer, using well developed communication skills and knowledge of community support programs, will work with Bimberi colleagues and young people’s care teams to encourage and support young people to connect with their community through education, activities and programs.
