Primary objective
A House Parent provides high level efficient and effective day-to-day delivery of student support for the Callistemon House
Boarding facility including providing administrative and program support, supervising and working with students and their
families/carers, providing transport and organising and supervising recreational activities.
Context statement
Callistemon House is a 40 bed boarding facility for secondary students from remote areas. The facility provides a safe, comfortable
and culturally appropriate environment for students seeking access to quality secondary programs leading to expanded education
and employment pathways. The work environment is characterised by extensive teamwork where intercultural knowledge and
skills are paramount.
Key duties and responsibilities
1. Support the successful daily operations of the boarding facility including working with students in programs, undertaking
independent living skills assessments, and supervising students on after-hours and/or weekend recreational activities.
2. Mentoring students in a range of life skills and competencies and undertaking independent living skills assessments (cooking,
cleaning, self-care, managing money etc.).
1. Provide a case management approach to improve student outcomes, and strengthen engagement.
2. Build strong connections and engagement with families and communities of students.
3. Respond to critical or emergency incidents that may occur within the residential setting in accordance with organisational
policies and procedures, in a timely manner.

Selection criteria
Essential
1. Proven administrative and supervisory skills at a community/residential care level, including demonstrated discretion,
confidentiality, sensitivity and awareness of the legal implications on 'loco parentis'.
2. Demonstrated focus on enhancing educational outcomes for students with a special focus on enhancing literacy and academic
achievement.
3. Demonstrated high level interpersonal, oral and written communication skills, with demonstrated experience interacting
effectively with people from diverse cultures including students, parents, carers and the community.
4. Demonstrated ability to organise a range of suitable recreation activities for adolescents including providing appropriate
engagement, supervision and transport.
5. Proven ability to participate as part of a team in the spirit of positivity, reliability, trust and collaboration as well as work
cooperatively with senior management, staff members and peers in achieving objectives and as part of the boarder school
community.
1. Proven ability to utilise computer programs to produce reports and correspondence and manage information.
Desirable
1. Formal qualifications in community or residential care and or previous experience in residential care in a school boarding
environment or willingness to obtain.
2. Bronze Medallion or willingness to obtain.
Further information
This position is open to Females applicants only due to the requirement to provide overnight assistance and care to female students
between the ages of 12 and 18 years of age, within a dormitory environment. This position is advertised pursuant to s35 of the Anti-
Discrimination Act. Applicants will have or be able to obtain the following: a Working with Children clearance notice (Ochre Card),
a current driver's licence and be prepared to upgrade to light rigid/MR vehicle, and a current First Aid certificate. Successful
applicants are expected to work a combination of day, evening, weekend and active night duty shifts and to travel (including travel
by light aircraft). There is no accommodation available with this position.
