We are seeking an experienced
Legal Counsel
with strong expertise in
employment law and employee relations
to join our client's Sydney-based legal team on a contract basis. This role will support the organisation across the Asia Pacific region, providing trusted legal guidance on all aspects of employment law, compliance, and workplace matters.
As Legal Counsel, you will partner closely with the
Human Resources
and
Employee Relations
teams, acting as the go-to advisor on sensitive and complex workplace issues. You will also collaborate with our
Global Employment Law
group and external counsel on investigations, disputes, and broader compliance initiatives.
This is a hands-on role suited to a pragmatic, solutions-focused lawyer who thrives in fast-paced environments and can balance commercial objectives with legal risk.
Key Responsibilities
* Provide practical and timely advice on all aspects of employment law, including contracts, terminations, workplace policies, performance management, and disciplinary actions.
* Advise on employee relations issues, organisational changes, restructures, and redundancies across the Asia Pacific region.
* Partner with HR/ER colleagues to design and implement compliant and effective people policies and processes.
* Manage and advise on workplace investigations, pre-litigation disputes, and litigation strategy in collaboration with global colleagues and external counsel.
* Monitor and interpret changes in employment law and regulatory requirements across relevant jurisdictions (including Australia, Korea, Japan, Singapore, and others as needed).
* Support compliance and risk management initiatives relating to workplace practices and employee relations.
* Build strong stakeholder relationships, ensuring complex legal matters are communicated in clear, practical terms to non-legal audiences.
* Contribute to broader legal team initiatives, knowledge sharing, and process improvements.
About You
* Law degree with current Australian practising certificate (or equivalent in relevant jurisdiction).
* Minimum 5 years' post-qualification experience in employment law, ideally with a mix of
top-tier law firm
and
in-house
exposure.
* Demonstrated experience advising across multiple Asia Pacific jurisdictions is highly desirable.
* Strong background in employment/industrial relations, workplace investigations, and dispute management.
* Ability to operate independently, exercise sound judgment, and provide commercially pragmatic advice.
* Comfortable working in a fast-paced, dynamic SaaS/technology environment with a high degree of ambiguity.
* Collaborative mindset with excellent communication, relationship management, and influencing skills.
