About the Role

The Department of Gastroenterology and Clinical Nutrition is advertising 6 ongoing vacant sessions to fulfil the role of one or more permanent Consultant Gastroenterologists with expertise in paediatric liver disease and liver transplantation. The sessions are available from 6/7/2026 and will allow appointment of individuals up to a maximum of 0.5 EFT or top‐up sessions for those with existing substantive appointments, to enable full‐time employment as a consultant. Sessions will be linked to inpatient and outpatient duties (clinics) and on‐call responsibilities, depending on the number of sessions the successful applicant is appointed to. The Head of Department will negotiate the details of on‐call duties and clinical sessions with the successful candidate.

The successful candidate will provide clinical care to paediatric patients with a full range of liver conditions, including complex tertiary liver and intestinal transplantation, as well as general paediatric gastroenterology disorders. They will contribute to inpatient and outpatient services (both on‐campus and telehealth) and be involved in on‐call duties. Collaboration with other services within and outside the RCH will foster a patient‐centred, standardised and sustainable model of care, and opportunities to contribute to research with the University of Melbourne and the Murdoch Children's Research Institute will be available.

Responsibilities

* Clinical management of the full range of outpatient and inpatient liver conditions, including liver and intestinal transplantation, and general paediatric gastroenterology conditions.
* Clinical management of all gastroenterology inpatients and consults while on inpatient ward service.
* Provision of safe and efficacious diagnostic and interventional procedures.
* Contributing to the development of models of clinical care for gastroenterological conditions to enhance the quality of care while maximising efficient use of available resources.
* Effective communication with other healthcare providers and consumers, including paediatricians, family practitioners, junior and senior medical staff, nursing, paramedical, clerical staff, families and patients.
* Administration and leadership roles in the department.

Qualifications

* Fellowship with the Royal Australasian College of Physicians (FRACP or eligible for FRACP).
* Fellowship training in Paediatric Gastroenterology (mandatory).
* Post‐graduate training and experience in paediatric liver and liver/intestinal transplantation.
* Well‐developed interpersonal and communication skills.
* Specialist Medical Registration with AHPRA.

Key Selection Criteria

* Postgraduate training and experience in paediatric gastroenterology, especially in paediatric liver and liver transplantation.
* Training in Paediatric Gastrointestinal Endoscopy approved by the Conjoint Committee.
* Ability to effectively interact with colleagues, patients, and families, as well as build and maintain working relationships with internal and external stakeholders.
* A flexible attitude is crucial, especially with the need to balance sometimes competing and conflicting priorities.
* Demonstration of efficient time management.
* A research qualification such as PhD, MD or Masters in Medicine will be considered favorably (DESIRABLE).

Other Information

* The appointment is subject to a satisfactory police check and a Working with Children Check.
