ARDS' purpose is to increase Yolŋu control of all aspects of Yolŋu life, through equal and genuine access to information, resources and decision-making. Led by the ARDS Board made up of Yolŋu leaders from each of the major Yolŋu communities, ARDS' cross-cultural approach puts Yolŋu perspectives, skills and decision-making at the centre of our work. We do this through five areas of work:
* Yolŋu Region Language Centre – supports local language custodians in keeping language strong.
* Community Development - under the guidance of local ŋalapaḻ (elders), works to strengthen local capacity, confidence and control in areas such as health, social and emotional wellbeing, and parenting and families.
* Law and Justice - works to ensure that Yolŋu Rom (law and culture) is respected and recognised by dominant culture institutions.
* Yolŋu Radio – broadcasts to Yolŋu communities and homelands celebrating Yolŋu identity & strength.
* Cultural Competency Training - delivers training to equip individuals and organisations working in East Arnhem Land.
About the Role
ARDS has experienced growth over the past five years and is well-positioned to continue serving Yolŋu communities. We are seeking a CEO to lead the organisation through our 2025–2029 Strategic Plan.
The CEO will provide strategic leadership, uphold cultural integrity, and ensure operational excellence to deliver culturally and linguistically grounded services. Key responsibilities include:
* Providing high-level leadership and overseeing the effective and sustainable operation of ARDS.
* Implementing and delivering the strategic objectives of the 2025-2029 Strategic Plan.
* Demonstrating a personal commitment to learning Yolŋu Rom, gurrutu, and language, and fostering this throughout the organisation.
* Promoting ARDS' work and reputation across sectors and stakeholders.
* Providing timely, accurate reports and strategic advice to the Board.
* Ensuring financial sustainability.
* Managing and supporting the professional development of ARDS managers.
Requirements
Ideal candidates will have previous CEO or executive management experience, a strong commitment to working respectfully with Aboriginal people and communities, and a deep appreciation for Aboriginal cultures. They should have experience interacting with dominant systems and strong knowledge of NT and Australian government policies related to Aboriginal peoples.
