The Department of the House of Representatives is seeking applications from those interested in directly supporting the work of the House of Representatives and members of Parliament at Parliament House in Canberra.
This is a casual role based in the Serjeant-At-Arms' Office. The Serjeant-at-Arms' Office provides services to support the House of Representatives chamber and Federation Chamber, Members and their staff at Parliament House, and employees of the department.
Specifically, the Office provides chamber support as well as services for Members, their staff and department employees in relation to security, mail delivery, office accommodation, committee room and courtyard bookings, building maintenance, business continuity planning, transport, fleet management and application of the Parliament House media rules. The Office also facilitates the School Visits Program in conjunction with other parliamentary departments and manages visitors to the Chamber galleries and parliamentary ceremonies at Parliament House.
About the role
The occupant of the role will support the Supervisor, Messenger Services, in leading and managing a team of approximately 30 (principally non-ongoing sessional) staff supporting the operations of the House of Representatives chambers and the department. The occupant of the role will undertake regular duties in the House of Representatives chamber and Federation Chamber in parliamentary sitting weeks.
The occupant of the role will support the Supervisor in performing staff management and rostering functions and will help ensure departmental information and requirements are effectively communicated to the Messenger Services team.
The occupant of the role will have demonstrated leadership skills, the ability to work with limited supervision and demonstrated knowledge of parliamentary procedure, or the capacity to develop this quickly.
