About the Office
The Office of the Supervising Scientist works to conserve, protect and sustainably manage Australia's biodiversity, wildlife and heritage. It ensures the protection of the Alligator Rivers Region, including Kakadu National Park, by undertaking environmental research and monitoring, regulating uranium mining and developing standards for environmental protection.
Key Duties
* Manage the day-to-day operation of the radiochemistry and alpha spectrometry laboratories, including staff, resources, workflow, data and records, procurements, commercial contracts and WHS requirements.
* Apply complex wet chemistry techniques to prepare environmental samples for low‐level radionuclide analysis.
* Install and maintain alpha spectrometry equipment and use it to measure the radionuclide content of prepared samples and calculate and report results.
* Develop, review and update standard operating and quality assurance procedures for radiochemistry and alpha spectrometry.
* Train and build capability in technical staff working in radiochemistry and alpha spectrometry.
* Lead or assist with field‐based tasks to support research and environmental monitoring activities within the branch.
* Perform the corporate role of either chemical or radiation safety officer (or deputy).
Eligibility
* Mandatory qualifications – a degree in chemistry (or a related discipline) or equivalent experience working in a wet chemistry laboratory.
* Citizenship – must be an Australian citizen.
* Pre‐employment Check – National Police Check, referee checks, character clearance, medical assessment, qualification validation and a 6‐month probation.
Requirements for Successful Applicants
* Hold a current Apply First Aid Certificate or ability to obtain within a short period.
* Hold a current coxswains licence or ability to obtain.
* Hold and maintain a valid Australian motor vehicle driver's licence.
* Meet physical fitness minimum standards to undertake work within the role, including firefighting as needed.
* Be a proficient swimmer.
Notes
* Relocation assistance subject to negotiation.
* Physical requirements involve a combination of outdoor and office‐based work.
* Specific training required: remote area training, defensive driving, first aid and CPR courses.
* Travel in remote/isolated locations in northern Australia or nearby regions; transportation may include vessels, light/commercial aircraft, helicopters and manual four‐wheel drive vehicles.
* Will be required to wear an official uniform supplied by the department during field operations.
* Will be required to wear appropriate protective personal equipment and clothing to comply with Work Health & Safety policies and procedures.
