Deputy principal (collie)

Collie
Government of Western Australia
Posted: 27 September
Offer description

Fairview Primary School (PS) is a Level 4 local merit-select school located in the coal mining town of Collie, which is situated in the picturesque Collie River Valley 200 km south of Perth, WA. There is strong collaboration with the Collie Senior High School and other primary schools and staff members within the Collie Valley Coalition of Schools.

Our school opened on 11 September 1959 with 113 students with the school colours of royal blue and orange. Today, enrolments are approximately 175, the majority living within the town-site. We have been on a considerable change journey over the past 10 years. Through our whole school focus on Positive Behaviour Support (PBS) and our values of ‘CARE’ – Cooperation, Achievement, Respect and Enthusiasm, we have developed a calm, caring and focused learning environment. Our focus on routines, both behavioural and learning, have optimised learning time and have allowed a much greater focus on learning. Over the past 4 years, we have been involved in a number literacy focus programs, including the Collie Literacy Project, the Centre for Excellence in explicit instruction in literacy and an ongoing professional learning program with the support of Cue Learning. This has seen our school behaviour incidents drop significantly and our school’s academic performance grow to well above like schools.

As a place to live, Collie is a lovely community. In the hills above Bunbury, our town is well supported by four primary schools and a senior high school. We have good health, retail and sporting facilities. Collie has become a centre for bush walking and riding and has extensive water sport opportunities in our river and local freshwater lakes. Collie is less than an hour from Bunbury, and you can be in the centre of Perth in about 2.5 hours. We are currently going through a “Just Transition” process with many new businesses and industries coming to town as we transition away from the traditional industries of coal mining and power generation.

The Role

Fairview PS has been on an extensive professional learning journey over the past 4 years with a focus on literacy and the sciences of learning. The ability to pick up on the existing whole school approaches and pedagogical models and support the school in progressing these is highly desirable. Our focus is on teaching literacy, not teaching programs. We have well developed scope and sequence documents, assessment and data processes and a strong pedagogical model. We are about to embark on a mathematics focus. While maintaining our strengths in literacy, we will apply the teaching pedagogies we have learned to the area of maths.

The successful applicant should possess strong skills in curriculum leadership, student social and emotional wellbeing and restorative approaches. Valuable communication skills and the ability to build and maintain relationships is essential in our community. As part of this role, the successful applicant will work closely with the school chaplain and psychologist to support students and their families.
